House Democrats quietly plot leadership plans while waiting for Nancy Pelosi's next move

The internal Democratic maneuvering to succeed House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is quietly playing out behind the scenes even as lawmakers are completely in the dark about her ambitions and future plans.

Members of Pelosi’s leadership team and those who have ambitions to succeed her have been reaching out to their colleagues and mounting a shadow campaign of sorts that will be ready to launch once Pelosi makes her decision and in time for the November 30 leadership elections.

“I’m getting tons of calls,” said one Democratic member, who like others, asked for anonymity to discuss the sensitive situation candidly. “The top three are mostly just checking in and saying, ‘Hi.’”

...why would anyone want to replace her?

As long as she still wants it, and feels up to the job, she should keep going. The hell with this talk of "new blood".

Nancy Pelosi was effectively the leader of the free world from January 2019 until President Biden took office. The debt that this country and the world owes her is incalculable.

If she (and only she) wants to step down, that's ok; but it should totally be HER choice. I would be delighted if she were to continue.

it's time to let go..young voters have spoken..allow Swalwell/Raskin/Porter/Escobar/Schiff/Neguse/Kim the opportunity to lead..they are educated, confident, aggressive politicians...I'm a 75 year old Volvo driving tree-hugging liberal Democrat and I welcome progressive change...

I'm ready for a speaker and a president younger than me. I thought Val Demings would've been perfect, but she had other plans. I think Katie Porter should've been promoted to Leader 2 years ago. We need a slugger leading the House. Pelosi's great but she's been playing chess in a boxing ring

…is a very bad idea for the Party.

With the GOP in disarray (I love being able to say that) we don’t want to hand over any ammunition to them and we do want to project a solid wall of Democratic unity.

Very solid. Very unified.

I suspect she is entertaining suggestions about a successor, and I also suspect she will make her preference known when she has decided on one. Maybe she already has. Saying ANYTHING prior to the definitive outcome of the election would be foolish, and Nancy Pelosi is anything BUT foolish.

Not Steny Hoyer.

I’d be fine with Nancy, but I don’t think she wants it. She’s been a stellar leader.

She has proven to be the most effective Speaker in my lifetime and maybe ever. When she goes, it would seem to open all of the leadership slots Hoyer and Clyburn too. They have been a great leadership team but are all 82 years old. Side question, why the animosity to Hoyer

He just comes across to me as a little too much of a politician. Just kind of rubs me the wrong way.

I might be totally wrong.

But I’d like to see some younger people in our leadership.

She's probably the only person who has any chance of maintaining a functioning House, even as minority leader. Otherwise the House will be completely chaotic.

I think the wildcard in her decision is the attack on her husband, how well his recovery is progressing and what he wants. They're both 82 and might not have that many years left together. She's a traditional Italian where family is everything. Otherwise, I think she'd be all in for another two years as D leader.

He was flagged a couple years ago when there was a bit of a skirmish.

Recently he’s worked behind the scenes to confirm his spot.

Tbh, Adam Schiff has my nod if he decides to go for it
