Peering over to Fox News to see how they were reacting to Lake's loss; McConnell appears to be the scapegoat for underperforming. McCarthy looks to be in decent shape on the hate machine, but McConnell appears to be on the outs.
At 80 it looks like they might be putting that horse out to pasture in a humiliating way after years of being the absolute worst. Couldn't be happier to see him go out that way if it is the case.

(11,796 posts)As obnoxious as mitch has been, he at least understands how to lead and wield power. Whatever nutcase gets to replace him, won't have the practical experience to lead that senate caucus out of a paper bag, and certainly won't be able to hold them all together on hard votes the way McConnell has.
This might seem like a great idea for them today, but 6 months from now they'll be saying 'oh, fuck...wait, what would Mitch do if he were here?'

(9,150 posts)the lesson of Paul Ryan. He got more knives stuck in him by his own members than by the Democrats. That whole MAGAT/GQP crowd is still yearning for someone to follow, like they had before in the Orange Ruski, who can be in power and threaten to burn the whole place down all while giving them a pass on ignorance and a pat on the back for racism and misogyny.

(7,368 posts)...when they actually repealed Roe, it was probably the last thing they wanted. It was a wedge issue they could use, now they can't and when you have some law makers actually talking about banning abortion nation wide to over-ride places like California, you are going to get a backlash.

(297 posts)about things like candidate quality and how that can bring down a candidate even in a favorable year, and as such was always a lot more iffy on the idea of stuff like the GOP winning the Senate. McCarthy, Rick Scott etc were the ones who were just like "WHO CARES, DOESN'T MATTER PLOW AHEAD!" with Rick Scott going on about 55-56 seats and freaking Blumenthal in Conn being vulnerable because he was just THAT high on his own supply.

(9,150 posts)we need to get some people younger than 75 into some of these leadership positions like the Whip. I think we have good prospects for future elections coming along from the ranks of governors, etc. I think the party would do well to focus on folks like the age of Pete B and realize that some of the younger crowd are very well received by voters as they demonstrate competence not only in handling their job but also in handling being in media interviews. This is not a knock on Nancy, Steny, Joe or Chuck but we must keep the enthusiasm going from the young and new voters. Let's show them we hear them and will act to give them positions to help run this country. We can look at more agency leadership positions for them as well as Executive Branch posts. We need to keep widening our margins and we can do that by embracing even more those voters in early and middle adulthood by showing them we don't just want their votes but we want them as people to be in government at all levels and in party leadership positions.

(5,947 posts)they desperately want this to be an excuse to pull the party further right.
This seems to be the standard behavior of the fringes after a surprise underperformance. I would not be surprised if foreign agitators are stirring this up as well, as its a subtle yet effective way to weaken us internally. I find myself becoming deeply suspicious of the motives of those who are adamantly at odds with the political center and any form of compromise.
