Senior administration officials see little chance of attracting any Republican votes for a bipartisan debt limit hike during the short session. And they dont believe they have the 50 Democratic Senate votes needed to slam through a hike using the budget reconciliation process that would allow them to avoid a Republican filibuster.
Already, Manchin has expressed reluctance to act on the debt limit with only Democratic votes, though hes declined to rule it out completely.
I dont think it should go to reconciliation, he said Tuesday. My goodness, its something weve always worked together on.
.
P.S. Joe Manchin is a fine American statesman (because thats all his fan club will allow me to say)

(10,008 posts)This is the most important thing that deserves attention during this lame duck session.
Pay your damn bills and don't tie it to cuts in much needed social programs that Americans that voted for you depend on.
No cuts to Medicare and Social Security to pay for pet projects. Raise the cap (Manchin was not opposed to raising the cap, as long as he gets his fossil fuel kickbacks and keeps his tax cuts for the wealthiest).
Same shit.

Unless Biden says go ahead, make my day.

(21,280 posts)should tell Manchin and Sinema, if the new Magat House shuts down the government Democrats are prepared to stand firm for Social Security and Medicare even if the shutdown causes a global economic disaster. Let them choose now and publicize their choice.

The only problem is the corporate media probably wouldn't tell the truth. Since the real problem is that billionaires and corporations don't want to pay the taxes necessary to repay the borrowed SS money (which paid for their fucking tax cuts), their media will take their side.
