David Badash, The New Civil Rights Movement
November 22, 2022

A federal judge on Monday wasted no time incarcerating Riley Williams, ordering U.S. Marshals to take into custody the Pennsylvania woman immediately after the jury handed down guilty verdicts in six of the eight charges in her January 6 Capitol riot trial.
Politico reports jurors convicted Williams, who was 22 on the day of the insurrection, on charges related to "participating in a civil disorder, impeding officers who tried to clear the Capitol Rotunda and disorderly conduct on Capitol grounds."
"But the jury failed to reach a unanimous verdict on two of the central counts in the case: whether Williams 'aided and abetted' in the theft of a laptop from Pelosis office that the speaker used to make Zoom calls amid the Covid pandemic, and obstruction of Congress Jan. 6 proceeding a felony that carries a 20-year maximum penalty."
NBC News describes Williams as a "far-right extremist," and reports she is "a devotee of Nick Fuentes and a far-right, white nationalist movement she is affiliated with called the 'Groypers.'" Fuentes has been described as a Christian nationalist, white nationalist, and "white supremacist leader and organizer."

(17,557 posts)Actually, she was permitted TWICE - and yet this judge felt that she was a flight risk and had her locked up immediately upon conviction.
Isn't it crazy that all of these "Law & Order" RepubliCONS think it should only apply to "others" - not themselves.

Sorry, couldn't resist, however weird and sad this truly was; he was just trying to stab a paper plate on the ground (not jousting with a really tough competitor).
I do suppose, though, per the story, the SCA is still working on that prevention part...

But DO absorb and keep the disgust, derision, condemnation, and vilification of a vast majority of the American people who vehemently disagree with - and hate - the shameful, disgraceful, and inexcusable things YOU CHOSE to do, along with that asshole mob, that day.
And then kindly go burn in Hell, honey.

This one is going to real time.

(4,728 posts)but so far, J6ers are getting fluff time. What's the worst, 7 years? Xrist, people are serving 5 years for thinking they could vote.

(12,744 posts)Since youre convinced she escaped justice maybe try going to jail for years. Im sure youll consider it escaping justice.

(11,704 posts)Because that's what happened. She should have faced twenty years, and "escaped" at least seventeen of them.

(8,655 posts)I heard no one claiming jail isn't hard.
I heard someone comparing the 2-3 years she's now up for vs. the possible 20 she didn't get because of a hung jury. That's the injustice. Hopefully, while she spends her 2-3 years, she'll get retried on the the other two charges and real justice will finally be served.

(4,728 posts)of how the justice system operates in political cases.
We see "other" people serving and being threatened with serious jail time for trying to vote (FL? ), while reich-wing thugs who commit crimes of violence, oppression and insurrection get soft time. Only the very worst get comparable prison sentences to Black people convicted of voting-because-they-thought-they-could.
It's a specific case of the general set of unequal justice, applied to political power. I think "white privilege" gets over-used, but these cases scream of it.
The Ren Fest celebrates old white feudal culture. I've been to one, it was fun, but it focused on feudal class structure of European culture. On one hand, greener low-tech (wheels and levers) ; on the other hand, lords and ladies. The criminal in question thought she deserved to be allowed to go to Ren Fest, and her judge agreed. Wow.
I would be delighted to find that I'm wrong and she gets hard time, with the felony charges re-tried, but I'm not holding my breath.

(2,075 posts)The charge of interfering with law enforcement officers during a civil disorder carries a statutory maximum of five years in prison. The charge of resisting or impeding law enforcement officers carries a statutory maximum of eight years in prison. The four misdemeanor offenses carry a combined statutory maximum of three years of incarceration. All charges carry potential financial penalties. The Court will determine any sentence after considering the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors.

(21,497 posts)She was profane, she was obnoxious and she was threatening, Jackson said of Williams.
This is a person who was packed and ready to flee once before, the judge added, saying that Williams father had offered her places to hide in the wake of the Capitol attack.
Prosecutors say they are still determining whether to retry the case against Williams on the charges of obstruction and aiding and abetting in the laptop theft.
Williams will be sentenced on February 22 and, according to prosecutors, could face two to three years in prison, according to sentencing guidelines.

You get convicted, you usually go to jail right after a conviction. Just because you're a whitey female doesn't mean you're exempt from it.
It takes some extraordinary situation to stay out--temporarily, like being pregnant.
