Republicans Called Them 'Witches,' Voters Call Them Winners

Governor Gretchen Whitmer. Attorney General Dana Nessel. Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson. Winners.

By LeftJabber — November 22, 2022

In March 2021, Ron Weiser, co-chair of the Michigan GOP, addressed the Republican Club of Oakland County, not far from where I live.

It’s hard to overstate the lunacy of Michigan Republicans at that point, many of whom were up to their eyeballs in election denial, some of whom were suspects in election-related crimes, and sixteen of whom are now under federal investigation as fake electors.

But in his speech, Weiser — who had himself narrowly escaped being charged with campaign finance violations — decided to bring some snark:

Michigan was a blue wave and an example to the rest of the country. And it wasn’t any one thing. But ballot proposals in 2018 for non partisan redistributing and ease of voting and in 2022 for abortion rights and again for ease of voting played a huge role. The 3 “witches” were getting re-elected regardless, but flipping both houses in Lansing was only possible with the ballot proposals.

And when the redistricting proposal went before the Michigan Supreme Court, it was left on the ballot by a majority Con court. It can be done.

We have re-elected a strong female governor for a second term whose lieutenant governor is the first black man to serve that post in state history.

We have re-elected a strong woman as SOS by a landslide who will be a strong candidate to replace Whitmer in 2026.

We have re-elected a gay woman as our attorney general.

We have enshrined abortion rights into our state constitution by a landslide vote.

We have enshrined ease of voting into our constitution by a landslide.

We have maintained a 4-3 advantage in our state Supreme Court.

Whitmer named the first black woman to sit on the Michigan Supreme Court.

The Michigan Supreme Court voted unanimously to name a woman the first female chief justice in state history.

The state House flipped to Blue for the first time in 14 years.

The democrats in the state House elected the first black man to serve as speaker of the house.

The State Senate flipped to blue for the first time in 40 years.

Both US Senators from Michigan are democrats.

Grand Rapids elected a strong woman to be our first democrat US House rep in 50 years, flipping the seat from red to blue.

And in 2016, Trump won this state, we had all 3 state executive posts in red hands. We had both houses of the state with Republican near super majorities. And the US house delegation was 8-6 Republican.

It can happen in other states. Wisconsin, Ohio, heck, even Florida! Michigan was purple and trending red just 6 years ago and now is all blue. Now get to work, Michigan will help show you the way.

I think our state is THE STORY of the 2022 elections. I’ve been happy to see it get some due in the news, but it needs to be even bigger. I’d like to see CNN, MSNBC, and even FOX do specials on how Michigan flipped from red to blue so thoroughly. Interview Democratic voters in diners. Talk to suburban moms. Analyze the message here.

It’s just a massive deal and deserves to be an enduring topic.

She’s got a folksy way of talking that reaches swing voters. She’s a centrist and has really worked with the other side a ton to get things done the last 4 years with GOP state houses.

And I think the next 4 years are going to be great for our state. She’s going to have a lot to run on. Wish Stabenow was in the Senate until 2026 because Whitmer would be a natural to replace her in the ballot then.

So I think in 2024 Stabenow wins again, but maybe in 2026 she steps down and there’s a special election to serve her remaining 4 years and Whitmer could run and win that easily. Stabenow has been great. But she’s nearing the end of her career.

Certainly an inspiration for other states who think it can't be done, even if there are for sure some that will take fifty years instead of five.

And many years before that of maintaining. But when Trump won Michigan in 2016 after Hillary’s campaign had taken it for granted until the last few weeks of the campaign, the Dems did some soul searching and went to work.

And you could see the work on thread ground. The outreach the last several years has been unprecedented.

And the get out the vote effort was unlike anything Ive ever seen. I’ve been a registered Democrat for over 30 years and I’ve never had as many knocks at my door from local Democratic operatives than I did this Fall. Every single candidate has people show up at my door just to make sure I was going to make it to the polls. It was amazing to see.
