https://www.cracked.com/article_36073_eric-idle-is-tired-of-comedy-giants-like-dave-chappelle-crying-censorship.htmlchoice cut from article, but read the whole thing, as it worth it, especially as the right wing trots John Cleese out.
On the topic of censorship, Swisher naturally asked Idle if he had any thoughts on Dave Chappelles constant claims that he is being silenced while getting paid $24 million per special to complain about how canceled he is. Said Idle, Where does he say it? On SNL Well, youre not being that much canceled, are you? If you were in your room complaining, Id have a lot more sympathy.

(12,506 posts)Guess what, I've heard both of them and I didn't cry like a baby.
I don't recall either of them spending 15 minutes on National TV talking about how the Jews run Hollywood, but you better not say that. I know that certainly seems like the sort of thing that a Jew like Lenny Bruce would use in his material.

(491 posts)Chapelle didn't spend "15 minutes on National TV talking about how the Jews run Hollywood".
There are interesting comments that have been made about his routine, both pro and con, but that is not one of them.
AZSkiffyGeek
(12,506 posts)But keep defending the transphobic anti-semite.

(18,404 posts)I mean, I didn't see it either, but I wouldn't be so quick to accuse someone of lying just because they don't agree with me about something.
Sympthsical
(9,987 posts)The exact opposite. He talks about Kanye and then says (paraphrasing), "There are a ton of Black people in Ferguson, MO, but they don't run the place."
His monologue was pretty interesting, because he was doing a bit of a high-wire act, and there was nuance in what he was saying.
So, basically not fit for social media consumption where simplistic characterizations reign.
I don't even agree with everything he said in that monologue, but people actually are either lying or spreading disinformation about what was said in it. He at no point said Jews run Hollywood, didn't intimate it, actually argued against it, and somehow people are spreading around that that was what his entire 15 minutes was about.

(1,055 posts)I watched the entire episode to decide for myself. And youre correct. Doesnt take a genius just put in the time to listen and hear.
AZSkiffyGeek
(12,506 posts)The whole basis of his routine wasn't the Kanye was wrong about Jews, it was that he shouldn't have said what he said out loud. And how it was easy to come to that conclusion, what with all the Jews in Hollywood.

(491 posts)Just "hearing" what you want to through strained interpretations so distorted that they're completely unrecognizable.
Watch this Jon Stewart clip for an actual nuanced discussion:

(9,987 posts)C'mon. At least describe his actual words. I get that people don't like him. That's fine. Not every comedian is everyone's cup of tea.
But he was very clear in what he was saying, and it was not "15 minutes of saying Jews run Hollywood." That is very much a "Tell me you never watched it without telling me."
People need to stop relying on the characterizations other people make as their information gathering point.
AZSkiffyGeek
(12,506 posts)He started out saying "Never use the following two words - 'The Jews'" and said that was Kanye's mistake - saying the quiet part out loud. Then talked about how many Jews were in Hollywood all the while saying, "I'm not saying they run it, but there sure are a lot of em out there."
Sympthsical
(9,987 posts)And you're already tracking back from your original assertion where you claimed he spent 15 minutes saying Jews run Hollywood.
I cannot stand dishonest characterization. It cheapens real bigotry when people want to wield it for their own petty dislikes. All it proves is conversation around subjects is impossible, because today's currency is cheap outrage easily had if we effect obtuseness well enough.
I'm not invested in this, so I'll leave it there. I just wasn't going to let that gross mischaracterization pass without comment.

(17,982 posts)But not on SNL.
His monologue on SNL was defended by many famous Jewish celebrities, including Jon Stewart.
I didnt find it all that funny, more thought provoking, or just plain provocative.
Im not a fan of his, but I didnt find his SNL monologue offensive.

(16,691 posts)I also like Richard Pryor and other comics who were rough around the edges too.
Someone like Richard Pryor would never make it today vs when he was performing. Times have changed and I understand the need of why they did and agree with it for the most part. But Id probably still laugh at most of those old routines.

(12,506 posts)And there were some absolutely brilliant skits during the show - Potato Hole was the funniest thing I've seen on the show in a while (definitely the funniest thing I've seen this season).
But that monologue was anti-Semitic.

(16 posts)...enjoy him now! I disagree with the assessment of his monologue being anti-Semitic.

(4,196 posts)I don't even like South Park! (LOL) I have a sense of humor, a pretty good one, if warped, my friends tell me. But most of what's on TV these days I really don't like at all. The last comic I'd actually make a point of turning the dial over to see was Sinbad. And I DO love me some Sinbad. I guess that just really dates me or makes a pollyanna or something.
