In recent days, several far-right House members have come forward to say they will not be voting for Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) for Speaker, throwing a monkey wrench into the Republican leader's longtime ambitions of taking the gavel, and raising the possibility that, just like in 2015, another Republican could leapfrog over him to take the Speakership.
On MSNBC Wednesday, former Republican strategist Tara Setmayer speculated that person could be Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY).
"Kevin McCarthy is a coward," said Setmayer. "They have been forthcoming how he feels about Donald Trump in public. You heard what he said in private. When he was called out on it, he bowed out and kissed the ring of Donald Trump. He knew he needed the MAGA wing of the Republican Party to vote for him to become Speaker. Having such a thin, small majority that they have right now ... it doesn't bode well for him. Because right now, there's a five-count margin of Hell No to Kevin McCarthy. He can only lose about four of them, because no Democrats are going to vote for him. So the dynamics here are concerning, if anyone thinks that Kevin McCarthy is going to operate in good faith. He's elevating Marjorie Taylor Greene, for goodness's sakes."
"Tara, I have to ask: if not McCarthy, who could be Speaker?" asked anchor Katie Phang.

It would serve that spineless wonder right, although Stefanik would be a flipping nightmare.

Even at that, whoever might leapfrog him is almost assuredly going to be worse.

(4,126 posts)The record is two months back pre-civil war. The freedumb caucus could be dumb enough to cause major delays.
I would hope that the never trump and never again Trumpers would not back a trump butt kisser like Stefanik.
The margin is super thin, not sure who would be acceptable to the KKKrazies and the normal F-the poor and help the rich rethuglicans.

I found the last sentence to be most interesting. What if they decide to do that and God Forbid, choose you know who?
Also, I'm glad she used the word "coward" in her reply. There are several of those in the Republican party right now, imo.

Bill Paxon (a former representative from New York) and Bob Dole were mentioned over the weekend as possible candidates for Speaker of the House. Neither one is currently a member of Congress. Is that allowed?
The answer is yes, though it would be a historical first.
The Constitution gives the House of Representatives the right to chuse their speaker but doesnt specify a procedure. This means every session of the House must first decide how to choose a Speaker before it can actually choose one.
Traditionally, Congress has adopted the following procedure (proposed by Thomas Jefferson). First, the party caucuses each vote to select a candidate. Second, the entire House votes on the two nominees. Since House members invariably vote along party lines in these elections, the majority candidate always wins. Thus the really important election is the nomination vote within the majority caucus. And House rules do not require that a nominee be a member of Congress.

(19,221 posts)There was some speculation about that being a possible outcome, but I doubt you-know-who would want it -- he'd have to (1) have some grasp of procedure and (2) show up occasionally.

One question I have is: What's the relationship between Stefanik and Crackpot Marge, Gaetz, and the other MAGAloons? Would Stefanik make the same kinds of promises McCarthy is making to these scumbags? Or, Scalise, for that matter?

Except another part of me is afraid of what the MAGAloons would pick if they get their way. Elise Stefanik? Ewwwww. And she's not even the worst possibility out there.
Whoever it is, it has to be someone most of the Repugs can agree on, and it's hard to umagine who that might be.

(71 posts)Is there a deal to be had between McCarthy and the dems? For example, could enough dems not vote, therefore lowering the majority needed for McCarthy and what would Kevin have to give the dems to make that happen? No crazies on committees? No dopey investigations? The 1/6 committee continues? No Hunter Biden laptop stupidity? But could Kevin be trusted?

'I am proud to endorse Donald J. Trump for President in 2024. I fully support him running again,' Stefanik said in a statement to Breitbart News. 'Under his presidency, America was strong at home and abroad, our economy was red hot, our border was secure, our neighborhoods were safe, our law enforcement was respected, and our enemies feared us.'"
