I tended bar at place with live rock and roll mist every night. We battened down the hatches for thanksgiving night. It seems that at some decent interval after the Thanksgiving meal is completed, many folks decide they just have to get out of the house. A large number of them would end up drinking and dancing at our bar. In fact, we could count on it being as big a night as New Years.
The vibe was different than New Years Eve too. New Years revealers have planned their night out and prepared fo it they arrived a little desperate for a good time. The Thanksgiving folks were often surprised to find themselves at a bar. They arrived with a sense of escape and relief from the strictures of their Thanksgiving dinner/day experience. They felt free to cut loose a bit more than on a usual night out. Beer, wine, and spirits flowed like a river. The dance floor never emptied and the tips were the best of the year. Folks had a gas.
So if you find yourself a little restive when dinner concludes and find yourself edging to the door to make your way to a favorite watering hole, dont feel guilty. Your participating in another-but lesser known-Thanksgiving tradition. And traditions are important.

I don't blame people for cutting loose after the organized chaos of big family gatherings

(12,374 posts)and sometimes took in a movie. We had an ice skating rink in town that was popular too. I have nothing against bar drinking but we never did on Thanksgiving. Mostly everyone had imbibed too much food and drink earlier in the day. But dancing would have been a great way to shed the overage as well. But then, I grew up in a religious Dutch town in Michigan, and there was only one bar and it was closed on holidays. And it certainly never saw any rock n roll bands, lol.

(999 posts)Worked at a bar in Georgetown in the early 80s for a few years and Thanksgiving night was always a busy night. It was a combination of people wanting out after a long day with family and friends home from college. Lot of fun.

(33,265 posts)Friday night is big for that, too.
Of course, our ridiculous drinking laws make that untenable until junior year.

(58,785 posts)leave the guys and others, behind with the football games and kids, to go dancing. Tradition, as you say, though maybe not one meant to last forever.

(64,957 posts)...it was the night before that was the big club night.
I probably played the Wednesday before Thanksgiving 22 or 23 times in 25 years.
Places were always packed.
Never played on Thanksgiving day, though.
