Now that theyre afraid of putting abortion on the ballot, anti-abortion groups are trying out a new strategy: They want to weaponize environmental regulations, like waste water restrictions, to limit at-home medication abortion, which has become the most common method of abortion in America.Students for Life of America announced Wednesday that they have filed a citizens petition with the Food and Drug Administration to require abortion providers to dispose of any tissue a person produces after taking the pills. The group told Politico, which first reported on the new strategy, that it plans to sue if the FDA rejects or ignores its plea. Kristi Hamrick, the chief policy strategist of Students for Life, said the move is the next innovation in restricting abortion.
The group claims that at-home abortion with pills is an environmental hazard, because people flush fetal tissue down the toilet and traces of the pills could somehow make it into groundwater. If that sounds awful, remember that abortion pills are recommended through 12 weeks of pregnancy; an actual early stage pregnancy looks like a clump or clot thats normally passed during menstruation; and miscarriages that people often mistake for a heavy period are flushed every day.
Nathan Donley, the environmental health science director of the Center for Biological Diversity, derided the anti-abortion groups strategy. Pharmaceutical contamination of water is a serious issue that can have serious impacts on the environment, but trying to say that one drug out of thousands is having an outsized effect is based on ideology not evidence, Donley told Politico. Of all the drugs and synthetic chemicals we shed that can potentially contaminate water, abortifacients are a fraction of a fraction of a percent. Its nothing.

Students for Life is working to draft bills with this goal nationally, as well as in state legislatures in Arizona, New Hampshire, and Ohio. And while anti-abortion zealots may not be able to outlaw abortion pills, strict anti-abortion regulations that make abortion simply too difficult can have a chilling effect. Its an updated version of TRAP laws, which impose medically unnecessary regulations on abortion clinics and that conservative judges have used to restrict abortion access.
This isnt the groups first anti-abortion-pill rodeo, either. In 2020, the group sent a letter to the FDA asking it to reexamine the environmental impact of abortions ending on toilets across America.

Abortion is now banned or severely restricted in 14 states in the US, the outcome of a decades-long campaign by anti-abortion advocates. In many states, abortion is no longer seen as a health procedure, but a morality issue. Pennsylvanias Doug Mastriano once a state senator, now running for governor is one of a number of Republican politicians who has called for murder charges for people who defy abortion bans.
In 13 of those 14 states, abortion is banned even in the earliest stages of pregnancy.
These images, supplied to us by the MYA Network, a network of clinicians and activists who came together earlier in the pandemic when some states tried to classify abortion as non-essential medical care, show what tissue in the first nine weeks of pregnancy actually looks like.

(31,492 posts)8. Social Vigilantes - Psychology Today
Like the vigilantes of the old west, these social vigilantes take it upon themselves to enforce their views of appropriate beliefs and behavior. Social vigilantes try to impose their views on the rest of us, pressuring and even intimidating everyone to adopt their beliefs about what people should think and how people should behave. Social vigilantes believe that they are obligated to enforce certain beliefs and standards even when they target thoughts and behaviors that are not in any way illegal and that do not directly hurt anybody.

Toward a Less Egoic World
Excerpt:
... Social vigilantes, on the other hand, display a particularly pernicious variety of runaway egoicism in which they are convinced that their personal views should be imposed on everyone. Just as the vigilantes of the old west believed they were acting on behalf of society as they enforced their view of the law, todays social vigilantes believe that they are acting on behalf of society to enforce correct ways of thinking and behaving.
Given the diversity of peoples beliefs and few agreed-upon criteria for judging them, what would lead someone to conclude that his or her personal view of reality should be imposed on everyone? What moves someone from merely disagreeing with other peoples beliefs and actions to insisting that everyone else conform to his or her own judgments about what is and is not acceptable?
Donald Saucier and Russell Webster at Kansas State University have begun to explore this question in their research on social vigilantism. Their research shows that social vigilantes go beyond believing that their views are correct, which we all do, to explicitly trying to propagate their beliefs. Typically, social vigilantes regard the mere expression of beliefs or attitudes that are contrary to their own as akin to a social crime that must be prevented if possible and punished should it occur. When other people do not share their beliefs, social vigilantes become upset and angry, and they take action to change other people's beliefs, which fuels conflicts with other people.
Not surprisingly, social vigilantes score high in dogmatism the tendency to be closed-minded. But not all closed-minded people take it upon themselves to impose their views on others. Social vigilantes are not only dogmatic but are also highly motivated to control other people, and they narcissistically believe that their views are so incontrovertibly superior that they should make an ongoing effort to change others "ignorant" beliefs. Ironically, they are also the sort of people who display a great deal of resistance (what psychologists call reactance) when other people try to persuade or control them which, of course, is what social vigilantes try to do to the rest of us.
