(3,546 posts)Ive heard its structured differently than Twitter. Is there a system in place to prevent trolling and hate speech? Can posts there be displayed elsewhere on the net, as is the case with Twitter?
I was thinking about trying Twitter, shortly before Musk decided to turn it into 4chan. I might look into Mastodon.

(4,728 posts)I joined, but I haven't figured out how to place a post yet.
I find the defult black background annoying, showing a bias towards phones, but I figured out how to change that.
I never joined the birdcage. I have to wonder: since a psycho right-winger now owns the place, does he own all the data users surrendered in order to participate? OF COURSE he would never abuse that! /s
Does he still own that personal data even if people close their accounts? (like Facebook NEVER deletes a photo from their database, even if the user deletes it. They use pics to train their facial recognition.)
Maybe users should falsify as much info as possible before quitting.

(51,276 posts)You just go any instance home page. The Local Timeline is from people with accounts on that server. The federated timeline is across the whole network of recognized servers.
https://mastodon.social/explore
At least on some instances you can use their search / explore function even without being signed in. Try the link above see if you can
search it. Edit: I guess it only returns hashtags, so yeah unauthenticated guests can only do limited searches and views.

(51,276 posts)Use the search box which you can always show by clicking on explore from the main menu. In the search box put the whole address like it is posted in the message above including the @ character. Hit enter, and check under people you should find a link to click. That will take you to a screen where you can click the follow button.

(35,176 posts)I had a Twitter acount and never really used it except to read endless silly and serious posts of people I admire mostly not political people. I never could figure out how to answer or post on someones thread. I basically started it to hassle a good friend of mine who was onstage getting ready to make his debut on bass clarinet in a well known jazz group. It was an endless time waste for me sadly so I am trying not to be interested in Mastodon. I will read what is posted here however as the time waste was me not the site.
