He challenged me at a game of 9 ball. His technique was awful, squeezed the cue and swung it like a ferris wheel, miscuing most of the time. I tried to get him to listen to me to make a couple of easy changes, but he knew it all. I quickly won the 1st 2 games, and finally I make him a deal, changed the grip he had on the cue and leveled off his stroke. That was my deal to him, try those 2 things and if they don't work go back to what you were doing. He conned me into letting him break since he lost the 1st 2 games. He made the 9 ball on the break and stood there in shock, and so was I, and he was recording everything on a video camera.
He came back and won the next 2 games to beat me, with a few mulligans, using the 2 little changes I suggested. He does listen to grandpa once in a while.
I left his house and made it home, a 2 hour drive, got a text from my daughter, the kid just beat her too, dad is next on his list.

(32,335 posts)There was a back and forth between us, my prodding, his reluctance. I made the deal with him to try the changes for 1 shot, his making the 9 ball sealed the deal. It would make a good training video.
Added bonus when we went back and looked at the video grandson admitted his original pool cue stroke was awful.
When I visit I figure out ways to get him off the computer games, he's an only child so my daughter signs him up for all kinds of extra-curricular activities; wrestling, basketball, Odyssey of the Minds a cool project involving programming and robotics.

(41,637 posts)... that a good pool player is the sign of a misspent youth.
And he was a pretty good pool player to our young eyes.

(5,913 posts)I've always preferred 9 ball, since one of those epic televised Willie Mosconi vs Minnesota Fats demonstration matches.

Fyi Mosconi wrote a small book on how to play. There are more than one edition and each has differing errors but solid guide from the greatest cue player ever.

(32,335 posts)The old timer told me that our town could be a layover between big cities. he said that fast Eddie Felson came into a bar he was sipping a brew and fast Eddie played him a game of straight pool. I forget how many balls it took to pocket to win, it was 125 0r 150 and the old timer told me he pocketed 26 balls and Fast Eddie told him that was darned good. Fast Eddie practiced with ivory balls that were oversized so they were harder to pocket.
Many years later I was a kid in that bar and the same old timer challenged me to a game of last pocket. It is 8 ball but you have to make the 8 ball in the pocket you made your last ball. The old timer said for 5 bucks and he got to break, I took the challenge. he broke, made a ball and then proceeded to pick up all of my balls and put the last one in a side pocket. The table was pretty open and he could watch his leave for my side pocket. I made a super duper bank shot in the side and told the old guy to keep his money.

But I'll bet you already knew that.
