Four men beat gay couple for holding hands after Pride. They got off with no jail time.

Four men in Florida were sentenced to probation and community service for the vicious 2018 beating of a gay couple at a Pride event because the couple was holding hands.

The attack on Rene Chalarca and Dimitri Logonov made national headlines at the time, taking place as the two were leaving a restroom in Lumus Park after Miami Beach’s Pride parade. The brutal attack was caught on security video.

---

“It was, like, instant. I got hit, and they knocked me out,” said Logunov, who said that the attackers called him a “fa***t” in Spanish. “We probably provoked them because we were walking together, holding hands. It was gay pride, South Beach was full of gay people.”

Chalarca and Logonov were hospitalized.

---

But under a plea deal last month, the charges were reduced to two counts of battery with prejudice. All four of the assailants got five years probation and 200 hours of community service, and they have to go to an anger management class.

If it was 4 African Americans sending a white couple to the hospital, there would be prison time involved.

Doesn't excuse it, but Florida has descended into lawlessness in the last 20 years or so. It's insanity.

it's like a different country in some ways isn't it?

I can imagine the frustration and pain of the victims. It unfortunately reminds me of my daughter's killer getting 4 years for her death.

Four people, two gays, two lesbians decide that a straight couple holding hands offends them and beats them down.

5 years probation and 200 hours of community service for them?

NO they would have been hunted down and murdered.

The courts are fully enforcing the increasing brutality in our society. The make sure it's possible to harm LGBTQ+ people without consequence.

I was wondering if there was more info, because I was ready to throw hands. Found a bit more in depth article:

https://www.advocate.com/crime/2022/10/25/no-jail-time-four-men-convicted-brutal-homophobic-attack

Four men in Florida were convicted yesterday for the brutal 2018 assault on two gay men holding hands in a public restroom in Miami, but escaped jail time thanks in part to the kindness of the victims.

A jury found Adonis Diaz, Juan Lopez, Pablo Romo, and Luis Alonso guilty of two counts of felony battery charges for the April 8, 2018 assault on Dmitry Logonov and Rene Chalarca. Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Ariana Fajardo Orshan sentenced the men to five years of probation but also required the men to publicly apologize to the victims, both of whom were in court.

Logonov said he moved to the U.S. to avoid persecution for his sexual identity, only to become a victim of the brutal attack. On Monday, however, he showed compassion for his attackers and offered them the opportunity to rebuild their lives.

“Today, I’m taking a chance to rebuild my life,” Logonov wrote in a statement that was read to the court by Hate Crimes Unit Division Chief Justin Funck. “I believe these gentlemen should have that chance, too.”

It sounds like victims were good with the sentence. They're a lot more charitable than I think I would have been.
