The local experts said the dome had been building for a while, and they only hoped that the eruption would be relatively confined when it came. Kilauea, in the south, had been sending out lava flow for twenty years, but it was widely known that Mauna Loa was due. It is a ways south of the Kohala Coast, where we usually stay when we are there. This is not often any more, but when our daughter lived there, we were there on a regular basis. Mauna Loa is still north of Kilauea, but a major eruption could disrupt the Kona airport, and that would cause some major difficulties.

At this time, the eruption is limited to the summit area and is NOT threatening communities downhill.

Im sorry but anytime a major volcano is erupting all communities downhill are threatened. There is no way to predict the direction of the lava flow and where it might break through.
