Rescue efforts are currently underway for more than 100 people who found themselves trapped atop a floating ice chunk on a Minnesota lake Monday. The ice broke while the group was ice fishing on Upper Red Lake in Beltrami County. “If you are on the ice and need to evacuate, head towards JR’s Corner. There is a temporary ice bridge to get across the open water,” wrote the Beltrami County Sheriff’s Office in a statement. “Everyone is walking across our bridge,” updated JR’s Corner Access on Facebook, sharing a photo of the wooden ice bridge at the southeast corner of the lake. Northwoods Fish Houses LLC, a company that operates on the water, estimated that some 200 people were on the iceberg when it broke away, according to the Daily Mail.

I heard the ice cracking. Had to jump across a river of water to get back to shore. Just before it broke, I was catching peach doubles as fast as I could bait my hooks. Kind of throw caution to the wind when they are biting like that.

Okay, I looked it up--it's a double hook rig--catch two at once?

Two hooks; two perch. Happens a lot during hot bites.

Here in Minnesota, you can only have one hook in the water, though. Other states have different rules.

We use "spreaders" or stacked hooks. Allows one to have two baits on one line. Drop to the bottom and when you get a little slack, that means it's on the bottom. Next, about 1/2 crank on the real so it's just off the bottom. Great when you are on a school of fish. Also used for crappies on inland lakes.

I did a lot of inshore fishing in California, though. When fishing for surf perch in rocky areas, I always had two dropper hooks on, one that would be just above the bottom and another a couple of feet higher. Typically, I'd have two different perch species on the line after each drop. They fed at different heights above the bottom.

I never did get into ice fishing here in Minnesota, though. Too cold and not enough production of interesting fish, mostly. I did a lot of lake and river fishing here the rest of the year, though. What a state for fishing it is!

is how great the fish taste. Always firm flesh. I tend to keep smaller ones than I would during the dog days of summer.
Haven't gone out in years because neuropathy in my feet. Now they are even cold in the summer.

Let's not tweak the heart strings unnecessarily and come after me for that.
Focus on what happened and how it could have been prevented. They took an uneducated risk.

If they're dead, they cannot "feed their families" ever again.

On an inland lake it only drifts 2 or 3 feet then stops. It causes a gap in the ice that they easily put a temp bridge over and that's that. they weren't floating on an ocean.
