"SNIP........

“The number of Russians in favor of continuing the war in Ukraine has fallen dramatically, with just one in four now supporting the conflict, according to leaked Kremlin opinion polls,” the Times of London reports.

“In July, 57 percent of respondents said they wanted to see Russian troops remain in Ukraine. That figure has fallen to 25 percent. Support for negotiations to end the nine-month conflict has risen from 32 percent to 55 percent.”

I was thinking of the US/Iraq World Cup match last week. Wait; that was Iran too, wasn't it?

Or, yeah, I screwed up.

Yeah, well, when they got what they wished for, they started having second thoughts. It's probably a safe bet that few Russians these days remember Country Joe McDonald: "Be the first one on your block to have your boy come home in a box."

Still, if the Russian version of "negotiations" means "give us your country, and we'll stop bombing it to smithereens," it's not likely to bring Zelensky to the negotiating table. I don't think the Ukrainians will consider that position worthy of a counter-offer.

Dec 2022

Christmas is coming, the shells burst everywhere
Won’t you please ask Vladimir why he sent us there
If you can’t find Vladimir, a general will do
But the general defected, so I will, too!

In Russian, “Vladimir” has the stress on the second syllable (vla-DI-mir), so you have to sing it that way, or it won’t scan, FYI

Some very dissatisfied, well-placed Russians certainly CAN do it, and, if things don’t soon improve for them, they might well do just that.

should be absolutely ashamed of themselves for ever being for it. There was no rhyme or reason to this conflict. Russia lied to their own troops telling them is was just a training exercise, then they lied to the whole country saying the Ukraine provoked it. Hard to believe there are people other than Americans that believe war is the answer to everything. It was sickening in this country when the Iraq war was started over a lie. Then another, then another. And a large portion of Americans still believed we were doing the right thing.
