Indonesia bans sex outside marriage as parliament passes sweeping new criminal code

Jakarta, Indonesia
CNN

Indonesian lawmakers unanimously passed a sweeping new criminal code on Tuesday that criminalizes sex outside marriage, as part of a tranche of changes that critics say threaten human rights and freedoms in the Southeast Asian country.

The new code, which also applies to foreign residents and tourists, bans cohabitation before marriage, apostasy, and provides punishments for insulting the president or expressing views counter to the national ideology.

“All have agreed to ratify the (draft changes) into law,” said lawmaker Bambang Wuryanto, who led the parliamentary commission in charge of revising the colonial-era code. “The old code belongs to Dutch heritage … and is no longer relevant.” .............(more)

Conservatism is a disease. Alito and the Handmaid would institute this here in a second if they thought they could.

I really don't think the average person in the US understands how close to ISIS the GOP's ideals are.

... and they're not liking they're own when there's a dictator involved.

It looks like more and more authoritarian countries worldwide are closing off the internets to democracies.

Christianity and Islam, make up closing in on 60% of the world population now, 4.5 billion or so and exploding, unfortunately.

The 3 biggest threats to humanity are, in no order:

Global warming.

Nuclear weapons (mostly the Russian and Chinese ones, although India and Pakistan could posdobly get to a nuke war stage against each other).

The expansion of fundie religion, plus the clinging to the woo that is religion and god(s) overall by non fundies who nonetheless enable the whole thing (especially the belief in a god or gods) to keep a certain legitimacy it never deserved. The wilful suspension of disbelief necessary to believe in a god or gods is the single greatest tragedy and disaster in 3.5 plus million years of human/hominid history.

However I would also add fossil fuel depletion, should it happen before we're ready for it.

If demand begins to exceed the capacity to extract these resources, and Big Oil decides to admit to the world it can no longer keep up due to factors related to permanent depletion ... shit is going to hit the fan, and it'll happen SUDDENLY, unlike the slow-burn of climate change.

I don't think this point is all that far off, myself. A lot of experts were predicting it circa 2005 ... then we started fracking like mad. But those wells don't last decades like, say Ghawar, North Sea or Alaska. We are scraping the bottom of the barrel right now, at least in terms of being able to keep up with demand.

All the more reason we need to get OFF these fuels if we possibly can.

is, I believe (though I should confirm), the only non Muslim majority island. I believe most of the people who live there identify as Hindu. Don't know if it will be subject to the same laws. (If it will, it will hurt their tourism if enforced. Not because there is a sex tourism industry there, but there is a hook up/party culture among expat types who travel there.)

So while it may be 'illegal' to have sex out of wedlock in Bali, if you're a tourist ... doubt you actually have much to worry about.

A woman gets raped, then gets arrested by the morality police for having sex outside of marriage. Of course, the rapist walks away free.
