(13,989 posts)After 2016 you never say never but DeSantis doesnt have the dark charisma that Trump has. Hes duller than a turnip.
CrispyQ
(36,463 posts)That's a perfect description, cuz Trump does have charisma. He knows how to work an audience & no matter how much DeSantis practices & tries to imitate Trump, you're right, he's duller than a turnip.

(9,287 posts)As far as being anti-lgbtq. He is anti science and would cripple our technological and scientific progress against disease as well.
Instead of focusing on saving lives and pushing treatments that we know work like vaccines and boosters Ron DeSantis is lying and putting Floridians at risk so he can score political points.
Orlando Sentinel: DeSantis blasts halt in antibody treatments even as drugmakers say they dont work on omicron
Bloomberg: Florida Governor Ron DeSantis said he would consider suing the federal government to allow use of two monoclonal antibody therapies for Covid-19, after the Food and Drug Administration halted their use and said they dont work against the omicron variant.
Washington Post: DeSantis said Monday that President Biden has forced medical pros to choose treating their patients or breaking the law. The governor added Tuesday morning, Without a shred of clinical data to support its decision, the Biden Administration has revoked the emergency use authorization for lifesaving monoclonal antibody treatments.
The science is clear that these specific monoclonal antibodies are not effective in treating omicron, and the Biden-Harris administration is stepping up to ensure Floridians have access to prevention and treatments that actually work.
CNNs Daniel Dale: As the DeSantis administration rails against the FDA decision to limit use of monoclonal antibody treatments made by Regeneron and Eli Lilly, worth noting both companies say they agree with the feds that these drugs arent effective against omicron.
Washington Post: Similarly, despite DeSantiss claim that there is not a shred of clinical data to support the FDAs decision, there is significant data on the monoclonal antibodies lack of effectiveness against the omicron variant in a laboratory setting.
Insider: Psaki said the Biden administration is investing in a range of treatments, including monoclonal antibodies, pre-exposure treatments, and oral antiviral pills. She noted that the administration has sent Florida 71,000 doses of antiviral treatments that are effective against both Omicron and Delta.

(1,828 posts)A family member who is MAGA residing in KY, switched to DeSantis without a beat. She didnt even stop to think that her picker was broken after *rump or take a minute to think the situation through!
These are the things that concern me. Two years from now I dont want to be sweating it out because we misjudged the power of the broken picker! 😊

(12,154 posts)Those are the two key criteria the Republican base cares about.
Scott Walker had the charisma of a dishrag as well, yet the Wisconsin Republicans almost managed to re-elect him as governor in 2018. Fortunately, his trial balloon for the presidency didn't go well in 2016. He didn't last long against the Trump onslaught.
We'll see how things go for DeSantis in 2024. If TFG is still on the scene, White Boots Boy may have a tough time of it like Walker. But without Trump, he could have a realistic shot.
Who knows, though? There was a time when Rick Perry scared the crap out of me, but he withered on the vine. Hoping for a repeat of that scenario with DeSantis.

(12,388 posts)And there are two sets of men in Florida who admire bullies: Southern Florida Cuban males, and Northern Florida rednecks. Throw in the wealthy republicans in the state that De Satan cow tows to at every opportunity and youve got his base.
And if you disagree or call me a bigot for thinking this way, live here for 45 years like I have and then we will talk.

(5,526 posts)But I would add a third class of bully lovers and that is a certain type of retiree.
I am sure you have seen them in the keys. They feel like they have reached a point in life where everything should be done to suit them. They dont want to fund anything they dont use like the schools. And they think that the culture should reflect the 1950s.
They have always been around but the development boom in places like the Villages is drawing them in by the thousands.
Unfortunately it has become a self fulfilling cycle because low tax voters are electing low tax politicians which is bringing more low tax voters.

(6,822 posts)DeSantis' their man. Suburban homeowners want to have someone in power whom they think will keep the riff-raff away from the value of their primary investment. Their interest and curiosity stop at the edge of that which impacts their net worth.
Rural Floridians are much less effected by social services than national demographics would lead one to believe. And their political views have little effect on state and federal races. Florida's voters are, to an overwhelming extent, urban and suburban. Even the small towns are more suburban than rural in character. They're generally also uninformed about the larger world and geopolitics except what they get from Fox News and other fiends of misinformation.
Prying the Republicans out of the asses of Florida's "everyman" will require something for which the Democratic Party has had a poor history. Speaking to the people themselves from a place of mutuality and commonality. Most Republicans I've met here distrust Democratic politics because they sense messages being spoken down to them without clearly explaining what and who is to blame. Messages made of generalities have no "bad guy" they can point to. They're not "process people", they understand they're being led and lied to by a clown show but when the Republicans lie with a straight face, they consider it a form of honesty they can understand.
I think a Democratic candidate who's not afraid to call his opponent a lying SOB would do well here, especially if he can rattle off a laundry list of real obvious lies which have hurt the voter. Much better than trying to point out the fact that DeSantis is a fascist or a racist. BTW, Charlie Crist was a ridiculous candidate to run here. Hell, the Democrats here don't even trust or like him because he used to be a Republican.
Also, mocking DeSantis in white boots won't play well here either. Go into most any work boot supply and you'll see more than half the selection of rubber boots are white. You will not last long working in outdoor Florida wearing dark rubber boots.

(99,710 posts)All that may be true but I'm not convinced he can beat Joe Biden running as a cultural warrior..
jaxexpat
(6,822 posts)In fact, it's a game of inches and, in truth, it's not really a game. Campaigning against an easily caricaturable politician like DeSantis by focusing on his repulsive cultural qualities will maintain and even increase the enthusiasm of Democrats to vote in already reliably Democratic cities, states or precincts but it will pull few, if any, Republican voters in Republican states into the Democratic column.
There is more to gain by pointing squarely at his cynical manipulation of his supporters, undermining his appeal by prosecuting the true nature and methodology of his success. Even complex and nuanced issues can be effectively conveyable if there's a hateful villain to blame and a hero at hand to repair the damage.
What I'm saying is that the inadvertent and continual setting up of American politics into a pre-civil war demographic stance is not a win for Democrats. In fact, this overly simplistic conceptualization (however logical on its face) has pushed many vulnerable and impressionable people ever more firmly into the jaws of MAGAtism, a predictable reactionary response.
