SOPA Shelved Until 'Consensus' is Found

Many Repubs aare opposed to this bill while many Progressives like John Conyers, Sherrod Brown and Amy Klobuchar support it. This is an upside down world.

Controversial online piracy bill shelved until 'consensus' is found
By Brendan Sasso - 01/14/12 09:41 AM ET

House Oversight Chairman Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) said early Saturday morning that Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.) promised him the House will not vote on the controversial Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) unless there is consensus on the bill.

"While I remain concerned about Senate action on the Protect IP Act, I am confident that flawed legislation will not be taken up by this House," Issa said in a statement. "Majority Leader Cantor has assured me that we will continue to work to address outstanding concerns and work to build consensus prior to any anti-piracy legislation coming before the House for a vote."

The announcement comes just hours after Judiciary Chairman Lamar Smith (R-Texas), SOPA's sponsor, made a major concession to the bill's critics by agreeing to drop a controversial provision that would have required Internet service providers to block infringing websites.

SOPA is designed to go after foreign websites that offer illegal copies of music, movies and TV shows with impunity. Even without the provision allowing sites to be blocked, the bill would empower the Justice Department and copyright holders to demand that search engines delete links to sites “dedicated” to copyright infringement. Ad networks and payment processors would be prohibited from doing business with the sites.

It denies due process. And for Obama to sign it before the election, he'd be cutting his own throat in terms of maintaining his online support.

People are only holding Obama responsible.

It won't even make it to his desk to sign if there was more opposition, especially from the progressives who are supporting it.

On this issue it seems like the Repubs are getting th upper hand. Michelle Bachman, Darryl Issa, Paul Ryan are among the repubs who are against it but some of our progressives are supporting it.

They'll try again right after the elections, or maybe in a few months or a year, when they think the public furor has died down and the pols aren't immediately looking at re-election...

is make a list of everyone in congress that is supporting both SOPA and PIPA and getting them fired in the next election. Make support for the two bills absolute poison for any candidate. When someone asks about support for the bill, anyone that doesn't answer "I'll vote for the bill as right after I cut off my own arm." or similar, that person has no business being in office. Unless people are willing to get rid of their congressperson, we will never be able to have any kind of progress. Obama can only do so much. I mean... he COULD veto these horrible bills and force congress to either give up or override the vetos. But he probably never will. Guy needs a spine.

Why would our elected representatives support censorship? Because they are bribed. The entertainment industry gave a total of $48.7 million in campaign contributions during the 2008 election cycle and have poured $100 million into lobbying every year since 2008 (opensecrets.org). Take the bribery out of US politics and the people will get real representation.

It's frustrating when we talk about the problems with the Dems the only person that gets the blame is the President.

Today on MLK day, the day celebrating the leader of the most successful protest movement in american history, the social networking site http://beyourgovernment.org launched. Our purpose is to elect candidates who refuse corporate donations(hence preventing laws like SOPA to be passed in the first place) using social and free media, please take the time to take a look. A great video about the project is here-

If we can replace the corporate owned incumbents in congress with occupy supporting, corporate money, refusing people from within our own ranks, then we can build a legislative bridge to whatever world we want.

Congresscritters, you cannot IMAGINE the world of hurt you'd be in for if you decide to censor the Tubes.

Actually, the world of hurt we'd ALL be in for, but we know y'all don't give a rat's ass about the rest of us, so I'm focusing on YOU.
