Her English was very good, but not completely fluent. She was 16, and was totally bewildered by the "ritual chanting" the kids did every morning. I said, are you sure? Ritual chanting in a Texas public school? What do they chant?

She said it was something long that sounded like it began with "I spread the peaches." Her English was good, but she had never heard the words "pledge" or "allegiance" before, and had no earthly clue what was going on. Since all the other kids in the class went along, and became normal again once the chanting was done, she was too shy to ask any of them what in the world they were doing.
