About the Speaker of the House

Is it possible that the democratic house members could recruit some moderate reasonable republican to run? He would only need what? a dozen or so republican votes to become speaker?

I am sure this has been discussed before, but i have not seen it and thought a lot about this.

Republicans can be very fractious, but are infamous for marching in lock step when it matters. Plus, they think democrats are evil, so joining such a coalition would probably be political suicide for then.

And if it did somehow succeed, that speaker would be completely ineffective as it would be impossible to hold together such a coalition. And everyone knows this so why vote for such a speaker in the first place?

So, while it's quite fun to imagine some of these scenarios, I think they're all quite unlikely to happen.
