when half the country is angry that a Black, queer woman was released from a Russian gulag. It hits hard especially when I am old enough to remember the hostage crises in Iran and Lebanon.

(32,088 posts)I'm watching a PBS documentary on WWI. Not much has changed for these assholes. They're the same ilk as the ones who pushed Jim Crow laws and had Suffragists attacked and arrested because they refused to stop fighting for women's rights because of the war. They're probably descendants of the same assholes who refused to mask up and take precautions during the flu epidemic at the end of that war. Some things never change, including the third of the country that are willfully ignorant, hateful knuckle-draggers.

(1,851 posts)Is this true? Or is this just the outrage-de-jour headline of the right-wing propaganda machines?
Fyi, I don't believe most polls, let alone comments like this that have no links to sources. My sanity
depends on ignoring most MSM, it's a torrent of trash.

(1,851 posts)I just don't believe the "half the country" part. It'd be interesting (maybe even useful) have a real number instead of such a wild estimate.

(515 posts)They are trying to win votes.
They want to foster dislike of President Biden and other Democrats.
So, they frame it by making it seem that President Biden chose to make a deal for her, because she was black and a lesbian, instead of using the same bargaining chip for a war hero.
I am not saying that any of that is true, I'm only pointing out how they are framing it to help win elections.
I do believe that some people think it is a shame to go out of the way to help a black lesbian, but those types would already vote in their favor anyway.

(1,945 posts)I'll assume that is sarcasm or meant as how the right winger see him? He was far from that. He was court-martialed and received a bad conduct discharge from the Marines. Here's a bit from his Wikipedia entry:
After a court-martial conviction in January 2008 on multiple counts "related to larceny", he was sentenced to 60 days restriction, reduction to pay grade E-4, and a bad conduct discharge.[9][10] The specific charges against him included "attempted larceny, three specifications of dereliction of duty, making a false official statement, wrongfully using anothers social security number, and ten specifications of making and uttering checks without having sufficient funds in his account for payment."[11]
Also: He said in a deposition in 2013 that he holds a bachelor's degree in criminal justice and an MBA degree.[15] He took courses at Northern Michigan University from fall 1988 to fall 1990 without earning a degree.[13]
Of course these things might make him a hero to those that admire a criminal, twice impeached, failure like tfg.
I don't think he should be left in Russia by any means, but the guy is no saint.

(3,064 posts)And most of the world is very happy with the fact that militarily we're #1.
Even though a lot of the ones that benefit most just love to rag on us. Fuck 'em.
Particularly Western Europe. Surely they're not so dense as to see that we are, in effect, Western Europe
2.0. Guess they're just hoping everyone's forgotten about how ungodly terribly they treated their
"colonial subjects." Belgium, The Netherlands, and Portugal, percentage wise your crimes were much, much worse than ours.
How many Empires weren't built, more like floating on blood? And that's for the rest of the World over several millennium.
We're the most diverse country on earth but our Constitution was written exclusively by Englishmen, including the EC and 2 Senate seats, regardless of a state's size. Maybe we'll be able to shitcan them.Sop to slaveholding states. If Lincoln hadn't been assassinated maybe he'd have gotten around to trashing them. As it is they're firmly embedded, for now.
