COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) More than 70 confirmed cases of measles have now been reported as the central Ohio outbreak of the virus continues.
Columbus Public Health reported Monday morning that there are 73 confirmed cases of measles in the area, a nine-case increase from Fridays reported numbers. CPH also reports that 26 people have been hospitalized with the virus.
Of the 73 confirmed cases, four of them are partially vaccinated children who have received one dose of the MMR vaccine. Two people who have a confirmed case are listed as having an unknown vaccinated status while the other 67 cases are in unvaccinated children. 70% of the cases are in children 5 years old or younger, according to CPH.

Measles is a highly contagious virus transmitted through coughing and sneezing. According to the CDC, infected individuals can spread the virus for up to four days before becoming symptomatic. It typically takes 8 to 12 days after exposure for symptoms to develop, according to Columbus and Franklin County public health agencies.

The stupid is strong w/these parents. Do they know that it was the measles or some other type of
childhood disease that made Helen Keller go deaf and blind and we have vaccines that stop those
diseases? You can turn on your radio in Columbus, OH and hear some right wing jack ass who knows
nothing about science and or medicine talking about the evils of vaccines and Dr. Fauci at almost any
time.

She remembers how bad the polio epidemic was.
One time she was talking to a strong, young man who was not feeling well and he just dropped to the floor.
Right in front of her. He never walked again.

After she retired and saw parents starting to refuse vaccinations for the children, she couldn't understand it.
Once we were having lunch at a restaurant and the child next to us was doing horrific coughing.
My mother said that child has whooping cough and has not been vaccinated.
My mother was disgusted and sad for the child.

As infectious as COVID variants can be, measles is still assessed to be more so.
After severe outbreaks among the Amish and other religiously-isolated communities (e.g., Mennonites) decisions to vaccinate quickly followed in recent years. Too bad others are not equally enlightened.

I've got anti-vaxers across the street a couple of houses down and they have full on church get-togethers with a dozen kids or more during the height of COVID and none of them wear masks. They are the Jesus take the wheel type of people.

The last couple of kids I had to argue with about vaccinations (because my administrator doled the task of communicating with students and parents to the student mentors, such as me) weren't even born in the US or in the US until they were of high-school age. (In one case I had to try to make the kid understand using my poor Spanish and his poorer English. New comer programs of 6 months' duration aren't academically useful.) The uptick in migration, esp. of families, has led to problems. If they go through approved channels, they get one shot; but after that, or if they avoid the approved channels, not so much. Yes, in some well publicized instances there were massive vaccination campaigns in some countries. But not for all infectious agents and not in all countries. The measles outbreaks, like the very recent polio "scare", were traceable to outside the US.
