Brett Kavanaugh Raises Ethics Concerns After Attending Holiday Party With Ex-Trump Officials, Hard Righters

By Ken Meyer
Mediate, December 13, 2022

Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh’s judicial ethics came under scrutiny after it was reported that he attended a holiday party with former Donald Trump officials and numerous other prominent right-wing operatives.

Politico Playbook reported on a Christmas party held on Friday at the home of American Conservative Union leader Matt Schlapp and his wife, Trump White House Director of Strategic Communications Mercedes Schlapp. Kavanaugh was at the top of the guest list, among several other prominent names flagged by Politico.

Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) and Ginger Gaetz, Sean Spicer, Alex Acosta, Sebastian Gorka, Stephen and Katie Miller, Chad Wolf, Greta Van Susteren and John Coale, Laura Schlapp and Bryan Wells, Brendan Carr, Rep.-elect George Santos (R-NY), Erin and Nick Perrine, Erik Prince, Ziad Ojakli, Peter Davidson, Steve Holland and Ben Terris.

Bloomberg noted that Kavanaugh’s attendance lends to concerns about his involvement in partisan activities, especially when the trust in the Supreme Court has been in a continuous decline, according to recent polls. Supreme Court justices are frequently critiqued for attending functions that coincide with their political views.

Failure to disclose membership in Hungarian anti-Semitic organization could invalidate Dr. Gorka's U.S. immigration status

WASHINGTON—U.S. Senators Ben Cardin (D-Md.), Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) and Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) today called on the Departments of Homeland Security and Justice to investigate whether senior White House counterterrorism advisor Dr. Sebastian Gorka falsified his U.S. naturalization application by failing to disclose his membership in a Hungarian neo-Nazi organization.

According to the Forward, leaders of the Historical Vitézi Rend have identified Dr. Gorka as a member of the organization who took a “lifelong oath of loyalty.”

“We note that this Administration has expressed a special interest in ensuring that those with extremist views do not exploit our immigration laws,” the senators wrote. “We are deeply concerned by reports that Dr. Gorka concealed the material fact of his membership in the Vitézi Rend, a far-right anti-Semitic Hungarian organization, when he applied for U.S. citizenship.”

I would really look forward to hearing your thoughts, Edmund Edmund, at a public comment portion of Gorka’s citizenship review hearing.

This, of course, brings to mind Sinclair Lewis's 1935 Book detailing a counterfactual history in which Fascism came to America. Here is Time's review: https://time.com/vault/issue/1935-10-28/page/87/

Lewis is widely quoted as saying "When fascism comes to America it will be wrapped in the flag and carrying a cross." A sentiment with which he would clearly agree, being a pithy statement of the dangers he foresaw—but one which he (apparently) never made.

Irrespective of this, so many in America saw such close parallels between Lewis's Buzz Windrip, and the real world Rumpdrip that

In the wake of Donald Trump's election, copies of Sinclair Lewis's 1935 satirical political novel It Can't Happen Here has sold out on some major online book retailers, including Amazon and Books-a-Million. The novel—which was written as Adolf Hitler rose to power in Nazi Germany—tells the story of a fascist takeover in America.

The main character, Buzz Windrip, appeals to voters with a mix of crass language and nativist ideology. Once elected, he solidifies his power by energizing his base against immigrants, people on welfare, and the liberal press.

Though the quote is likely apocryphal, it is clearly and sadly true that Fascism is coming to America wrapped in the flag and waving the cross.

Check out this RawStory article about Seb Gorka. . .

Sebastian Gorka, former senior aide to President Donald Trump who left to go back to Breitbart, had trouble parking his black Ford Mustang convertible in Washington, D.C. Thursday night and it brought plenty of mockery.

It was revealed in July that Gorka drove the fancy car but only because of the unique vanity plate reading "Art of War," a favorite book of his friend Steve Bannon.

Boof in Fla:

A few months before that, Kavanaugh represented former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush in his controversial quest to set up a school voucher program that would direct public money to private religious schools. The Florida Supreme Court ultimately struck down the program in 2006.

Jeb Bush's brother, George, then president, nominated Kavanaugh in 2003 for the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit — a move that didn't sit well with Illinois Democratic Sen. Dick Durbin.

Durbin, during Kavanaugh's confirmation hearings, called him the "Forrest Gump of Republican politics … whether it's Elian Gonzalez or the Starr Report, you are there."

Kavanaugh, who clerked for Justice Anthony Kennedy, the Supreme Court justice who is retiring, had also worked for independent counsel Kenneth Starr.

The other big thing, Associate Justice Kennedy’s kid worked at Deutsche Bank, where he made a big impression on somebody.

Say hello to your boy,” Trump said, “Special guy.”

“Your kids have been very nice to him,” Kennedy replied.

“Well,” Trump said, “they love him, and they love him in New York.”

Scalia once lobbied Obama advisor to have Elena Kagan nominated to the Supreme Court

BY CNN WIRE, FEBRUARY 15, 2016

When the shocking news of Justice Antonin Scalia’s passing hit Saturday night, my mind raced back to a White House Correspondents Association dinner seven years ago, when we were seated together.

We bantered about my hometown of Chicago, where he had taught law before ascending to the bench. He opined on wine and music and generally lived up to his reputation as a man who told and enjoyed a good story.

And then our conversation took an unexpected turn.

Justice David Souter, Scalia’s longtime colleague on the court, had just announced his retirement, creating a vacancy for President Obama to fill. Scalia figured that as senior adviser to the new president, I might have some influence on the decision — or at least enough to pass along a message.

“I have no illusions that your man will nominate someone who shares my orientation,” said Scalia, then in his 23rd year as the court’s leading and most provocative conservative voice. “But I hope he sends us someone smart.”

A little taken aback that he was engaging me on the subject, I searched for the right answer, and lamely offered one that signaled my slight discomfort with the topic. “I’m sure he will, Justice Scalia.”

He wasn’t done. Leaning forward, as if to share a confidential thought, he tried again.

“Let me put a finer point on it,” the justice said, in a lower, purposeful tone of voice, his eyes fixed on mine. “I hope he sends us Elena Kagan.”
