Paul Pelosi attack: Man told cops of 'evil' in Washington

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The man who allegedly attacked the husband of U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said there was “evil in Washington” and he didn’t plan to target Paul Pelosi, a San Francisco police sergeant testified Wednesday.

The suspect, David DePape, broke into the Pelosis' San Francisco home on Oct. 28, seeking to kidnap the speaker — who was out of town — and instead beat her 82-year-old husband, Paul Pelosi, with a hammer, authorities said. The violence sent shockwaves through the political world.

DePape, wearing an orange jumpsuit during a preliminary hearing in state court, has pleaded not guilty to federal and state charges, including attempted murder, burglary and elder abuse. He remains held without bail.

Sgt. Carla Hurley, who interviewed DePape for an hour the day of the attack, said the defendant told her that he was seeking the speaker and told her husband that he was not part of the plan.

You're looking to stamp out evil in some city on the east coast, but you wind up breaking into a house on the west coast? Compass directions can be soooo confusing! And poor, misunderstood David hadn't planned nothing, and he certainly didn't plan to attack Paul Pelosi. But you know how one thing leads to another? Happened to David back then. Finding himself on the wrong side of the continent, in the wrong house, with the wrong victim, David had no choice but to start swinging a hammer at Pelosi. The evening shouldn't be a total loss, right?

Anyway, the bottom line is that David has learned his lesson, he's suffered enough, and he's ready to go home now, please.
