What does that mean?
First, the bill defines drag as any transgender person performing. A differing gender identity than their gender assigned at birth is the literal definition of transgender. Having a trans person perform at all by singing, dancing, or performing renders a venue a sexually oriented business.
This is a ban on transgender people performing at all and to capacity in Texas.
It would also detour businesses from hosting drag events, as they would then be considered a sexually oriented business and must never allow a minor to enter, not just during the event. Not only that, it imposes a $5 fee per person on any business that hosts a drag event.
The bill also incorporates the ability of the Attorney General to sue and enjoin any business that violates this law. Ken Paxton would have the legal authority to sue any venue that hosts a drag performance and potentially close it down.

(22,590 posts)If this chucklehead really wanted to ban every movie where an actor dresses as a gender other than their "assigned at birth" one, he'd really have his work cut out for him.
Texas would have to outlaw a crap ton of movies, including Some Like It Hot, Tootsie, Mrs. Doubtfire, Victor/Victoria, The World According to Garp, The Birdcage, Shakespeare in Love, Yentl, Mulan, The Brady Bunch (remember RuPaul's caneo?), The 2 Eddie Murphy Nutty Professor films, every one of Tyler Perry's Madea Movies....and on and on and on and on and on. And that's just a random sampling, not anywhere near an almost, sort of, semi-exhaustive list.
I'm not even going to get started on TV shows, lol.
It does sound like he's mostly concerned with live performances, but it seems kind of pointless to put so much effort into that in this day and age when people can easily watch all kinds of all kinds of drag, trans-themed, and and/or cross dressing for comedic effects material right on their own TV or other electronic devices in their own homes. But nobody said dumb clucks like Patterson need to concern themselves with making sense!

this kind of shit will never fly. well, it is texas. but even there, i can't believe this could pass, if only because these shows make money, because people enjoy them.

(7,952 posts)Most trans people identify as their chosen gender for life , whereas drag is someone specifically dressing for an occasion.

(77,323 posts)bar? Screaming closet case. Somebody is spending a lot of his time thinking about men dressed up and looking fabulous.
Btw I solved my gay problem years ago and that is I don't have sex with men. Problem solved. Btw If you don't like drag shows don't go.

Get prepared for laws that violate every part of the notion of freedom from religionlaws the right-wing SC will uphold because they are a huge part of the problem with taking away rights of self determination.

(4,168 posts)in the fictional Tuna, Texas, it's hilariously funny. There are four including Greater Tuna in the series: A Tuna Christmas, Red, White, and Blue Tuna, and Tuna Does Vegas.
Greater Tuna debuted in Austin in 1981, and premiered off-Broadway in 1982.
A version was produced for HBO and it was performed in the White House for George H.W. and Barbara Bush at their invitation.
Yet this yahoo would choke off these kinds of productions, at least in Texas. I guarantee it's brought in significant revenue to the state since it debuted. By 1985 the Greater Tuna website says it was THE most performed production in the U.S.
