Shockingly, I think this hurts that more than the criminal and civil cases pending against him. His base would always view those as political persecution. But that same base cannot escape the blinding and inescapable ridicule that will come from today's "Big Announcement".

Before today, I think they had to take the threat of Trump forming a 3rd party or running as an independent seriously. He could have pulled 15-30% of their most loyal base away.

But the complete embarrassment of today's stunt drains any chance of him being a credible candidate again. If he's still around in 2024, I doubt he will win any GOP primaries or pull even low single-digits in the General Election as an independent. It's just a question of what excuse he will use when he quits.
