Meghan Markle's real sin that the British public can't forgive-and Americans can't understand

(snip)

From conservative commentators to everyday people on phone-in radio shows and social media, the central thesis was constant: People have it much worse than Meghan Markle. How dare she complain? It’s not about race, they argued, it’s Meghan’s attitude that is problematic. British journalist and media diversity expert Marcus Ryder, who occasionally graces Fortune’s commentary section with his insights, defines it as the difference between diversity and inclusion: Meghan’s presence can be accepted–but not her values.

(snip)

But what values is the British public taking issue with, exactly? Concerned radio listeners and TV pundits in the U.K. were crystal clear: Markle is making a fuss—and many people have it much worse in these difficult times. She should just accept her lot in life (objectively better than most of the rest of the world) and carry on. On the flip side, emotional tributes to Harry’s grandmother, her late majesty Queen Elizabeth II, invariably saluted the monarch’s life of service, sense of duty, and lack of self-pity.

(snip)

And while the British Empire undeniably had a dark history, modern-day Britain is a radically—and racially—different society. This explains how a Hindu man called Rishi Sunak reached No.10—by grasping the class system at a very early age, as seen in a now-famous video where a teenage Sunak explains he doesn’t have “friends who are working-class.”

Perhaps that’s the most terrifying thought for the British public about the whole Harry and Meghan predicament. If the Sussexes can take issue with the privileged position they were handed, what about us? Does it mean we all have to speak up now? God no. The sheer awkwardness would be unbearable—and Britain’s nurses, postal workers, and rail unions are already getting ideas as we head into a Christmas of discontent.

Put your head down, do as you’re told, and carry on! And if the economy continues to tank, we’ll layer up and cut some corners–just like during the Blitz.

her marrying Harry has exposed the under the surface racism of British society, and some Americans are falling for the Brit criticism of her.

It's all bullshit. Why should she accept Brit society's sneering attitude that she should just shut up, be quiet you're living a privileged life but you're Black and inferior. Deal with it.

I don't blame her. What people are forgetting is she's a Black American woman who grew up here and knows of MLK, Fannie Lou Hamer, Rosa Parks, the whole civil rights movement and doesn't have to take that racist shit of being sneered down at and told to be quiet and take it.

She and Harry, supporting his wife, got our of Dodge and my hat is off to them.

Why should so many here be glued to TV to watch these programs?

But then, I don't know why so many want a football player and a coach to be U.S. Senators.

Same as with the Roman gladiators, distract the masses.

would still be in Britain and in good standing with the royal family.

If media people want to throw money at them for their story, that's American society, and after all, they better get it while the getting is good because they were cut off by the royals.

Once the media feeding frenzy is over and they're old news, it'll be over and the American media will move on to the next celebrity, royal, political, tech, sports scandal of the month.

We live here in American. That's how it works.

I do think that’s why so much hatred is directed at her. Her and Harry did not shut up and allow the media to attack them and use them for their own aggrandizement.

When the media announced they were dating she was introduced as an actor on an American tv show. For those of us who'd never heard of her, it was okay yeah how nice for them whatever....

I didn't know she was black until the press pointed it out. I still don't know much about her career, where she grew up, does she have siblings, etc.

Just that she's black. That seems so deliberate

First with Diana and now with Meaghan, I have spent hours in the black hole of history on my google machine. Colonization, first country to ban slavery, how differently the British, Belgians and French governed/treated the people in the countries they colonized.

Imagine living in a time when people believed, honestly believed, colonization helped the colonies. How in some cases it did. How the colonization of India started.

This is the "next" chapter in the history of a branch of "our" people and it has as much to do with politics as it does with fashion. And of course, I always hope it will lead to a final reckoning of sorts.

And to watch Harry realize the parallels of how his wife and his mother were treated. And his oh so earnest attempt to "save" Meaghan as if he could have his mother.

Meaghan was an independent, self sufficient, in some ways famous in her own right woman. Who thought it would work to lock her up in the tower?

Camilla hanging out with these men who fantasies sexual violence against Meghan. Can you imagine living near this family if you were Meghan? It's horrible.

as priorities.

Harry seems like a lovely man, and definitely his mother's son. I think they made the right decision leaving. The Windsors are a horrible bunch. Meghan could have really helped William and Kate bring the Royals into the 21st century. I blame William for their fall-out. But they're young. There's time for william to come around when he's king.

Jeremy Clarkson dreams of Meghan Markle 'paraded naked through the streets' in vile rant

Jeremy Clarkson, 62, said that he hates Meghan Markle more than serial killer Rose West and said that he 'dreams' of her having excrement thrown at her in a nasty, hate-filled rant on social media

Jeremy Clarkson has issued a foul rant about Meghan Markle, insisting that he "hates her on a cellular level" and wants her to be "paraded naked through the streets".

The television presenter said that he "dreams of people throwing lumps of excrement at her" in the insensitive spew of hatred towards Meghan - who he has never met.

Jeremy's vile comments came as a reaction to Meghan and Prince Harry's docuseries, which saw the Duchess open up about suffering with suicidal thoughts.

The couple used the Netflix series to try to share their side of the story after stepping away from the royal family.
