Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsOk, I watched the entire Megan & Harry special on Netflix - I am not a royalist.
First three episodes were about their very special love story. Bored me to tears. Seemed a bit pretentious. Everyones love story to them is special and perfect. Just was a bit too heavy on that subject.
Second three episodes had some of the same. But much less. Way more interesting. The reason for fracture of the brothers relationship. The pure racism they faced. The press harassment and lies. Most interesting was the revelation of a handful of trolls on social media responsible for the hatred, racism, and spreading of lies. Causing a real concern for this couple and their childrens safety. And Harrys family non response to it and non assistance to help and create a safe place for their grandson, son, brother and his wife and children was appalling.
Therere was some value to it especially in regards to hate on social media and the press. How it is altering our world. And no one is stopping it. Just another example of how bad it is and can be. Look at how we got Trumpass and his sycophants and what happened to Nancys husband and January 6th.
This world can be a really sick place.
Thats my humble take, anyhow.

(114,580 posts)if only because our gutter press has been sued more frequently and lost. Theirs would put flies off a garbage truck.
So I think those two are well out of it. They can go back and make an appearance at weddings and funerals, wave to the press, and go home to relative sanity.
I don't think I'd be particularly interested in a protracted Netflix series.

(7,891 posts)Haven't got Netflix, even if I did.
Wouldn't be anything new in it for me.
Watched the whole sordid M & H versus the joint forces of the Monarchy and gutter press develop over the years and thought they would be better off well out of the whole situation.
Their love story broke so many unspoken rules of British society that the 'we are not racist but . . . ' reaction was predictable and unavoidable.
Not a fan of anything to do with British royalty, just concerned for their mental welfare.
Glad they did get out.

(114,580 posts)but it's a lot thinner out west and rich people here don't have the burden of proving their pedigrees, not yet, although I'm sure the billionaire class will eventually become as inbred as European monarchies.
But that's a story for another day. I think he's likely the best of a bad bunch and I hope they're doing better here.

(8,999 posts)that I had to watch them twice to make sure I didn't miss anything. I found the series riveting. I'm definitely not a 'royalist'. I don't follow tabloids because, they are tabloids. I don't believe a word that is printed in them. Just like the Fox Spews channel. I don't watch because it's mostly lies and alternative "facts" that has destroyed families in our country.
What I found so interesting is the racism because, I too am married to a Brit and he's got brown skin like his ancestors in India. So not the exact same racism like Harry and Meghan but close enough. We've experienced some events in our life that I will attribute to racism but none of it was illegal or in our face so much that we couldn't rent a place or things like that. My hubby is highly intelligent and speaks German fluently. (I'm American I speak English, is always my reply even living abroad. A long story about that for another post).
I actually cried a little with Meghan during that series. It was really sad what she had to be forced to endure and Harry was really shocked at how his family turned on him. Wow.
I have several British friends here in Switzerland and I have learned not to discuss the royal family with them. The royals are on a level in British society that I don't know and don't understand. My hubby doesn't care one wit about the royal family and he doesn't read tabloids either. Those people in the UK that read that nonsense and believe it are the same as the fox watchers in our country. They are brainwashed and stupid to follow those publications which the series made abundantly clear.
If you have a negative view of Meghan, then you've been suckered and bought into the hype from the tabloids. I'd say, you've been fooled and might want to rethink your position about the whole situation. Your opinion is exactly what the tabloids/twitter have done to our society.
I wish Harry and Meghan the best life in America. I think they made the right decision to sue the papers and move to America.

(15,409 posts)and brought the series up, and it was a short conversation - she truly hates Meghan Markle and all that she did to the royals. Thought William was a nice guy until hooking up with her.

(13,964 posts)were opposed to watching it. In my opinion thats very judgey for never even seeing it.
All the things people hate the Trumpers for is packed into this story of a very sad racist story!
I think its very telling and candid story. People should have a look before they condemn them.
I think the world could use more Harrys and Meghans.
I hope they are together forever!

(13,850 posts)That is also the reason I don't understand all the ire they (she in particular) draw from people.
They are so polarizing, and I honestly don't get it. I don't love them. I don't hate them. (Same with the rest of the royals as humans, though I think royalty is a super classist bullshit system.)
People talk about them as though they're evil incarnate, and it's ridiculous. But also? They're flawed humans who probably have rubbed some people the wrong way. Oh well.
(Also, I don't watch reality shows, even when they're dressed up as high end documentary style shows.)

(16,384 posts)They are not polarizing. The British tabloid's continuous lies about them have polarized people. Much the same way Fox news have polarized American politics.
People are actually in jail for death threats against Harry and his family.
Dorian Gray
(13,850 posts)I don't personally think they're polarizing. I'm perplexed that other people find them polarizing.
But they are to a lot of people. (And yes, the tabloids are a major part in that. Racism and classism and a supreme love for the WHATEVER the royal family represents.)
And despite feeling that way, I still don't want to watch their show.

(17,240 posts)After watching it I came away with a feeling of sadness for both Harry and Meghan. I personally believe that leaving the royal family was the right thing to do.
I'm not a royal watcher and have no real stake in the royals except that I find it all very fascinating.
The social media hatred and the ties that were uncovered was disgusting to me. I say live and let live.

I really liked the entire thing.
And I agree that the most important part was about the trolling that caused the hatred. It was happening just after Brexit, and I believe that their wedding and popularity were softening the division in the country, and so the trolls (Russian, no doubt) had to stir up the hatred so that the Brexit wounds in their society would not heal. It's widely understood that Putin hates UK and USA, and wants to sow divisions in both societies to weaken them.
Overall, I became very sympathetic to Harry and Meghan and understood their story, after not paying much attention to it to this point. My belief is that UK is foolish for having driven them off. They had a lot to offer the future of the monarchy. Oh well, UK's loss is America's gain!
Edited to add:
Another important feature of the series was learning the extent of the white privilege/supremacy inherent in the British society. They have, currently, over 2 billion people of color under their commonwealth, who work, basically, to fatten the British coffers. And when the royals deign to tour the commonwealth, these people of color are required to shower them with adoration!
