Should Harry Reid take this opportunity to KILL the filibuster?

knowing how he works- the repugs will promise not to use it anymore- harry will trust them and let it stay- and then the repugs will say: "we're not going to use it any less, either."

Just bring back the old rules. If you call for a filibuster you own it and have to hold the floor non-stop.

There are some proposals out there to water it down but not do away with it completely. The Merkley-Udall-Harkin bill is one approach but I think there are others. Harry Reid has promised to reform it.

As in, can't be used as a threat, requires the actual work of NOT leaning, sitting or quitting until collapse. Having actually filibustered something once*, it is incredibly hard work that most people won't do. But no more threats. Kill that part dead.

Right now, it's the equivalent of an elder sibling hovering a finger about an inch from a younger sibling and saying "I'm not touching you!!"

*High school student council. At the time, we used the unabridged RRoO for procedure, and the council had the O So Brilliant idea that Prom should only be for couples (i.e. no single ticket sales, no group ticket sales, and no group pictures.) At the time, I thought it was important. Four hours of reading aloud while standing was hard for a motivated, healthy teenager. The procedures were soon after abridged, but we got group Prom.

It may be drastic but its abuse is too destructive to governance to allow it to remain.

The Republicans broke the agreement.

In addition, President Obama should go ahead and make recess appointments to everyone on his list as soon as the next session of Congress breaks.
