"Woke" is a term that originated in Black American vernacular. It refers to not getting so comfortable that you forget you are still a target of oppression.

... but my son (who is now 52) has always been more liberal and progressive than I. I think he inspires me to keep trying harder when I feel myself backsliding. He's definitely the most liberal person in our family.

The term has been co-opted by the left and by the right. For us to use it, it seems to me that to the right and the middle, we’re claiming membership in an exclusive enlightenment club that they’re not part of, and I think it serves to alienate voters from voting D. The right has certainly used the term to ridicule left but that’s just a replacement term for progressive and for liberal and for commie, etc.

I know this is probably not a popular opinion, and I don’t know how the African American community feels about others using the term and changing its meaning, but it comes across to me as spiritually arrogant.

47. Me too. I got it from my parents. They inoculated me, and my brothers, before we could think on...

own! I am SO glad they did...

The evil's of the Cold War, the anti-Civil Rights movement, the hidden side of the Vietnam War, the fights for Women's rights, disability civil rights...all those became clearer to understand because of that inoculation.

And now, I've done the same to my two sons. No complaints so far.
