(34,744 posts)SAN ANTONIO A blaze in a parking lot destroyed 97 vehicles at a cook-off staged by firefighters for victims of house fires, officials say. Investigators speculated a discarded cigarette or a hot catalytic converter touching the dry grass on which the cars were parked may have triggered the blaze Sunday at the 3rd Annual Bush's Canned Foods South Texas Menudo Cook-off. Several firefighters and a few spectators were treated for heat exhaustion and smoke inhalation. The event was sponsored by the San Antonio Professional Firefighters Association to benefit families whose homes were destroyed by fire. About 8,000 people were attending the cook-off, which continued despite the fire.
