(4,489 posts)Put some bird food on the deck this morning and had 7 blue jays show up for peanuts. I'm glad I don't have to deal with snow removal today because it is most definitely cold out there.

(4,652 posts)I'll wait until after Christmas to be sick of it. So. Cal is sounding very nice right now. Florida sounds fantastic. Wait I am supposed to say that it's to bad you won't have snow for the holiday. I said I would wait to complain until after Christmas but fuck it. I am sick of this shit. What I am thinking about is Huntington Beach.
You are not wrong malaise.

(60,097 posts)I flew out on the 6:40 plane to München (Munich), no de-icing was even necessary. But when we landed in Bavaria, the ground was covered with snow, and a nasty wind was blowing. MUCH colder down there.
I WAS happy that I had decided to take the train back. It even left on time. BUT--this is the German train system (thou shallt not repair thy trains, or even maintain them properly). So now the train has stopped at Montabaur, between Frankfurt and Köln, to "test" the train and see if it can be trusted to travel any further. If not, they will probably tell us to leave the train, stand outside in the cold and damp, and wait 45 minutes while they send another train from wherever it is they might have one that can roll 200 km without falling apart.

Hope you are setting up to have a great holiday.

(60,097 posts)As it turned out, they stopped the train for nothing. It took them nearly half and hour to determine that there was nothing wrong after all.
Im on the commuter train to my small town, where I should be home by 17:45 our time. Maybe 90 minutes of follow-up paper work, a couple of calls and emails to Dallas and Paris, and Im taking my nephew, who just arrived from Kyiv, out for a Greek dinner. He got in this morning, but our neighbor, who works near the airport, picked him up and brought him to our house before returning to work. Were getting there!

It does sound like and very interesting dinner. Tell him happy holidays from me/us.

(4,652 posts)While alpine skying is having to be re-scheduled in Europe. How is Garmish parkenkergen. I probably spelled that wrong. It's bucket list material for my wife and I to spend a winter in Europe and watch Alpine Skying especially the downhills at Wengen and of course the Hannenkahm.

(60,097 posts)I was always nervous about breaking something, mostly my neck. My younger daughter is the fearless one. She already did break something, came back one time from Austria with more metal in her leg than organic material. Or, at least, her X-ray looked that way. Did that make her more reluctant to ski? HAH! She couldn't wait to drive back down to Austria and go zapping down the slopes again. But, don't forget, this was the one who, while in law school, instead of clerking for some judge during summer break, instead joined the UN War Crimes Commission in Sierra Leone and got some horrible infection that almost killed her, and then couldn't wait to get back to Africa.
I think you mean Garmisch-Partenkirchen. German names can be a mouthful for furriners. One time, when my daughter was in law school, members of her class were reading aloud, and then discussing, passages from some case involving Volkswagen. In her passage that she was to read aloud, there was the full name of the company: Volkswagenaktiensgesellschaft. The class, including the professor, was gleefully waiting for her to stumble over that, but she just read right through it without stopping. They all said WHOA!! How did you do THAT? She just stared at them and reminded them: "I'M GERMAN!"
Wengen and the whole Berner Oberland is one of the most beautiful places in Europe. You'll love it there. I've never been in the winter, but before my wife had her first round of cancer, we used to go there in June for brief getaways. We stayed in Mürren, a village up the side of a cliff without cars. Hotel Alpenruh. Very primitive, but comfy with great breakfasts and hiking. When the clouds clear, the view is breathtaking. The café at the tiny train station at Lauterbrunnen is a joy, too. Just stare at the cliffs and the waterfalls.
My wife doesn't dare return, unfortunately. She had three or four girlfriends about her age (49-50 at the time) who all had breast cancer around the same time she did. All four of them, within a year of (successful!) treatment, went high into the mountains for a vacation. All four of them had a massive return of their breast cancer within a few weeks/months of going into the mountains, and all four died of it. You won't get my wife back up there no way no how. There is supposedly a medical explanation for that, but it is not considered absolute, and so this is not a traditional admonishment to breast cancer survivors. Still, four out of four is not a statistic she is willing to bet against.

waiting for a two-part storm to hit, followed by a blizzard. Below zero temps go with it!
Some of our company/family are coming tonight instead of Friday or Saturday, just to be safe.

The foothills get up to 6 inches of snow about twice a year.
Enough to take pictures and show to the valley dwellers.

(9,298 posts)I guess Im one of the only DUer that love seasons. I want snow and cold weather near the holidays. I moved away from Tampa Florida because that type of heat hurts my body.
I have a fireplace and a new book coming for Christmas. A cat on my lap, and Im waiting for it to happen.
However, dont need to travel, or go to work. That makes a difference.

(79,625 posts).... the storm marches through as rain on Thursday, turning to snow on Friday, though it looks like we're going to dodge the heavy snowfall totals (Weather Channel is saying 1 to 3 inches)

(4,652 posts)Finally stopped snowing. Well over a foot on the ground. Latest snow dump about 7 inches. Nothing new for Spokane so snow removal is good but the kids being out of school, and the xmas approaching make it a bit slower. Yesterday was a nightmare.
Temps heading down over coming days. Possibly to record setting lows.
Long johns and sweats, check.

(3,580 posts)We're supposed to get into the upper teens tonight with twenties tomorrow, then a return to 40* to 50* and rain for the rest of the week. You folks who have lots of snow and much colder temperatures have my sincere sympathies! I wish you plenty of heat for your homes, great food with friends and family, and a very merry Solstice!

(5,104 posts)but perhaps "winter-ish?" Winter-adjacent?
Now all that cool air seems like it is being sucked out, and we are getting back to "same old, same old."
Today will be 72, and Christmas will be 80. How is that fair?
Those blessed to live in winter wonderlands, I hope you enjoy the snow and seasonally appropriate weather.

(17,757 posts)But we have several days of teens and 20s lows coming for Christmas. For North Florida that is COLD. Snow is not likely, I have only seen snow on the ground perhaps a half dozen times in my 70 years; it is an event to remember. The plumbers will be working overtime for weeks or months fixing broken water pipes when this spell is over. The last time I recall it being that cold was in the mid 80s. I plan to draw in the porches and watch it from inside.
