(2,133 posts)but it is unfair to compare facebook with Twitter. I avidly use facebook but it is more about watching videos and music. Twitter is more oriented to news. Stats are not always an accurate way to look at information. I don't have a twitter account.

(15,522 posts)Especially the "hey, look what I found/just did" or "WTF is this?"type of crowd-sourcing for comments or information dissemination. Then they added the ability to upload pics and video, and that's when it really took off. In 2008/2009 sometime, I actually participated semi-professionally as part of a crowdsourced info/feedback thread on someone's field findings. It could be useful. After that, I'll admit to only providing the occasional snark drop once every couple years. But that participation in crowd-sourcing, even at 144 characters, was pretty cool.
The people actually using Twitter is what initially made it interesting as a spectator sport.
Otherwise, it would have been just another chat program competing with AOL or MS Messenger, or comment sites like 4chan.

(15,522 posts)than MySpace, Facebook, or the various Usenet or Messenger services that were popular back in the day. And it was focused primarily on crowd-sourcing. Not a dedicated forum/chat feed as most of the other social media sites were at the time.
But if you've looked at the history of social media, you'll see that it really hasn't taken off as much as media in general likes to portray it. The dedicated users and forums on Twitter are still focused on news feeds and science/engineering crowd-sourcing. The personalized entertainment or transactional apps one can get on other social media platforms is just not really there.
Twitter is not WeChat or Facebook/WhatsAp/Instagram or even YouTube, on which a business platform or social organization can be run. It's pretty much what the niche purpose of it is. No more, no less.
