Blizzard warning for Buffalo and Niagara Falls

The warning is from Friday morning through to Monday morning. Snow is likely to be only a foot of accumulation. The problem will be the wind which is now predicted to be around 70 mph.

The rainy portion of this storm starts on Friday and is expected to cause flooding in low lying areas. The temperature will drop very quickly and dramatically as it has in the West. On top of the rain and flooding, the sudden temperature drop will produce flash freezing. Then the snow starts.

In surrounding areas, the wind predictions are lower, around 45 to 50 mph and snow predictions vary from 18 inches to 4 or 5 inches, depending on specific areas.

Wind chill will be -20 and lower in some areas. Power outages are expected.

2. ??? I don't get your point.

This is not a competition. I am only relaying how geographically extensive this storm system is and how it is affecting various regions.

4. Yup. About -15 at my house. But the snow has already moved out, so no blizzard for us!!!

5. I get chilled just reading -35 degrees.

I am hoping that we don't get any colder than -20. If the power goes out, it will not take long for high winds to chill the indoors, too.

6. Yes.

That is what worries me here. We need the power. We live on a hill, in the country. Although we have newer siding, insulation and windows, that is not enough in the type of weather they are predicting.

If we had to get to town, if they had power, that could be dangerous, too.

7. I grew up in the area. Definitely concerned about the flash freeze

situation leading into the brutal arctic conditions. My mom is 85, and still lives in the area, and I had the opportunity to spend a little over a week with her, between the pre-Thanksgiving storm and this one! She has a dog that needs to go outside a few times a day, so I'm definitely worried about how she'll handle that.

I'm in eastern Iowa, and the temperature here is plummeting as we speak. It was already cold and dry, so no flash freeze issues, but blowing snow and extreme wind chills for the next couple of days will be the primary issue. I feel sorry for anyone that has to be on the road over the next 2-3 days.

11. Do you have contact info for her neighbors

so you can ask someone to check on her? I wonder if her dig would use newspapers or puppy pads. Or maybe a neighbor of hers could take the dog out for her.

Local agencies will be helping, too. Maybe you could call the local police number and ask for a wellness check.

9. Stay safe, All!

Heavy rain here today, followed by an inch or so of snow, flash freeze & very high winds for here.

Supposed to be below freezing for a few days when this storm passes by.

Nothing here is built to withstand this type of cold & high winds. Last year during ice storm, over 100 water mains in Memphis broke.

My home is very well insulated & ductless hvac is excellent. My concern is potential power loss.

I shopped yesterday, so I'm in for the duration & beyond.

12. I used to have a supervisor who was from North Carolina.

When we asked him how he liked winters in the north, be said he'd take the snow any day over the damp chill and ice storms in NC. I imagine it's the same in TN.

I just returned from a grocery store. It was crowded, but due to Christmas and not the storm. I couldn't believe the denial that I overheard in people's conversations. They said that Buffalo would get the storm, not us, and that Buffalo is used to it. It's true that, although we're near Buffalo, we usually miss the worst of these storms. But this is widespread and we will get the flash freeze and some high winds. They don't seem to understand the nature of this storm.

I have one more stop today, to the drugstore to refill a med.

Then I'm staying inside.

16. It was crazy out there yesterday. Real "holiday" spirit.

Numerous people cutting others off in traffic, pushing, shoving, & numerous verbal attacks. I detest this area.

Too many meth heads & rednecks.

While I was in Aldi, a woman in a huge suv parked next to him, crooked, nearly sideways.

She proceeded to walk over to our car which he had parked straight & within the lines, & vehemently cussed him out for the way he parked.

He told her to learn how to drive & park, open her eyes, & quit trying to blame others for her own inability to drive & park. Of course she continued to rant & cuss at him, but hd didn't pay attention, so she left.

Violence & property damage is so high here, he drives me to grocery to protect car from vandals & auto theft. And to protect me from being mugged for the food I buy.

A real shithole. Like living in a 3rd world country.

Glad you've planned ahead & will be staying in! I'm not going out till we need food again.

Idk how people survive using denial as a survival mechanism.

Happy Holidays!

10. Ice storm predicted for Eugene

Could be up to a half inch of ice. That’s a lot of added weight to tree branches, plus wind, could be a big mess. About 25F right now

19. We had a bad one January 2017

Lost one big tree, damaged another, but no structural damage or power loss. This one’s supposed to have a lot of wind, too. Thanks for your concern
