In August 2022, the DCCC published its 87 page oppo research book on George Santos.

It was posted online immediately following Santos's August 23 primary win and available to anyone who bothered to access it.

In addition, the DSCC issued a press release the same day that highlighted key findings of the oppo research team, including Santos's failure to file requisite financial disclosure documents, his multiple evictions, his ties to the Harbor City Capital ponzi scheme, and his unexplained post-2020 dramatic increase in personal wealth.

Both the Republican Party and the media careerists have been very busy this week pointing fingers at the Democratic Party, as if we are the ones responsible for the candidacy of George Santos and the failure to report (and further investigate) candidate Santos's shady background.

Where was the New York Times before the election when it really mattered?

I worked this election. This information was also among the talking points we gave to phone bankers and canvassers.

A consortium of conservative super pacs pumped tens of millions of dollars into the the NY races in an effort to elect Lee Zeldin governor and flip the House and Senate red, and the media story line was "CRIME! CRIME! CRIME!" which helped amplify Republican messaging.

Thanks so much, Lapucelle, for the OP and further explanation of the context in which this happened.

The money pumped into the midterms nationally broke all records and required a lot of triage on our part, even though Democratic campaign fundraising totals actually exceeded Republican.

From the Brennan Center:

A look back at campaign finance in 2022 highlights four points.
* First, even massive participation by everyday Americans giving small donations is dwarfed by megadonors’ control of the process.
* Second, election deniers were boosted by big money from national donors, even in traditionally sleepy state races.
* Third, megadonors take advantage of “dark money” loopholes, which should be closed.
* Finally, popular reforms are advancing, like New York State’s groundbreaking small donor public financing program.

There were wall to wall ant-Democratic candidate ads. There were also very frequent negative mailers.

One mailer for NY-3 Republican candidate Anthony D'Esposito claimed that he had the endorsements of the PBA and Nassau County police unions.

It was a lie. Those unions had endorsed Democrat Laura Gillen.

Santos lost to Suozzi (D) in 2020 by 12 points
Suozzi ran for governor in 2022

Seat was redistricted
From:
OLD DISTRICT

To:
NEW DISTRICT

I don't know enough about the area

But here were the polls

My experience is that we are more purple than anything else.

Both NY-3 and NY-4 were open seats this cycle, with two popular Democratic representatives retiring. That coupled with high Republican turnout for odious local boy Lee Zeldin (who was running for governor) and the influx of tens of millions in superpac cash set the stage for those seats flipping Republican.

You know how the Times hate influencing elections. Like in 2004, when the Times sat on a story about the Bush administration spying on citizens, not publishing until December after Bush had been safely re-elected. Of course, not publishing affects the election, too, but that's not a concern for the Times. Unless it can be used in the week before election day to damage the Democratic candidate.
