Trump, and a few of his cronies, actively planned to nullify the 2020 election and take control of America. That's called a coup d'etat; the criminal overthrow on a legally elected government. In other words, they planned to do away with American democracy and install "Dear Leader" for Life.
This has succeeded countless times in various countries around the world, and the outcome is usually ongoing misery for the country's people, and a life of wealth, luxury, and absolute power for those in power. Take a look at Russia today. Putin and those loyal to him own mansions, yachts, private jets, and literally, everything else they want to own. The people must keep their mouths shut and survive as best they can.
And if Trump and his thugs are not punished to the maximum for their attempted coup, the next ambitious prick who thinks he can get away with it will be encouraged to try it again.
Here are my thoughts for a fitting punishment for Trump and his fellow traitors:
* Fine Trump et. al. for every cent they have, and sentence them to life in the most rural part of the poorest U.S. state.
* Life in prison. Somehow, this seems insufficient, as they'd have many guards sympathetic to their cause and to them.
* Send them to Russia or Saudi Arabia. Let Putin or the Saudis do what they will with those they can no longer use.
* Exile them to an Island on which they'll be the only inhabitants and have to depend on each other. (This is really cruel.)
And Finally, a demented Majory Taylor Greene punishment if the situation were reversed.
* Suspend the Constitution. Skip the trial. Build a guillotine. Line up the TV cameras. Let the games begin.

(81,259 posts)If we even get that.
I do not see the DOJ wanting to go to trial.
I think the DOJ strategy right now is to put public pressure on Trump so he will settle with some sort of deal.

Kick them out of the country.
I don't want another tax penny spent on their security or their imprisonment.

(5,151 posts)severe enough for this man's crimes. The crimes he can be tried for in court aside, he has destroyed the fabric of our country and severely damaged the cause of democracy around the world. He has re-awakened expression of racism, antisemitism, xenophobia, and rank ignorance, and he has enabled those who hate to act--proudly--on their vile beliefs.
I might be satisfied by total obliteration of all memory of him and his family.

(13,282 posts)All money taken away including pension from presidency. In fact if they can't get prison just him living poor with zero help from anyone would be a good start.
In our society his followers would probably do a go fund me and not sure that can be stopped.
But what he deserves, prison with zero money.

(130,526 posts)extreme poverty and total obscurity, since nothing is more important to him than wealth and fame. Of course he should go to prison, but I'm guessing that if he's convicted he'll be sentenced to house arrest because of the security complications (he's entitled to Secret Service protection for life; what will be done about that?) and his age.
Bernie Madoff, for example, became kind of a hero in prison, and the same would probably happen to TFG. "There is, as it happens, honor among thieves, a fact that worked mostly to Madoffs benefit. In the context of prison, he isnt a cancer on society; hes a success, admired for his vast accomplishments. A hero, wrote Robert Rosso, a lifer, on a website he managed to found called convictinc .com. Hes arguably the greatest con of all time." https://nymag.com/news/crimelaw/66468/ TFG would be an even bigger and more admired con among his peers in the slammer.
So I'd sentence him to be poor and forgotten. Let him live alone in a run-down double-wide in a seedy rural trailer park, surviving only on Social Security. No one ever calls or visits him. He's nobody. He'd hate that even more than prison, and it wouldn't cost the taxpayers nearly as much.

(4,815 posts)I looked it up and this is supposedly the "most terrifying prison on earth". This is what I would consider "suitable punishment" for Trump and his thugish friends.

(2,640 posts)security, white-collar-crime prison like Otisville, and NO possibility of parole in either case.
And if they were to choose the maximum security prison, they would receive no special privileges, like a private cell.
It would be interesting to see which one they would choose.

(13,710 posts)Life with no possibility of parole at one of the country's penitentiaries which have a high percentage of black and Hispanic residents. Spread these jackasses out across the country with only a few at any prison. Let them experience the real cancel culture, and then shut off the Faux News feeds into those institutions.

Within our sad real-world limitations, for the lot of them: Life in federal prison, conforming to international human rights laws, but no special conditions or privileges, no leaves, and very few, regulated interviews.
Oh well to me if some, including tRump, became top dogs in their social circles of fellow sociopaths. What kind of people would we expect to be there?
