(24,903 posts)Just bloody cold and snow and ice.
All it takes is one person driving too slow or braking suddenly in front of someone else. The 2nd vehicle starts to slide and that's all there is to it.

Plus steadily falling snow can obscure where the road is by covering up prior tracks and drifting into the already plowed snow. Been there many times. (The conditions, not the mega accident.)

(24,903 posts)But I'm sure you know pileups like that can happen on a bright, sunny day as well, if the road is slick and someone panics.
And it's almost ALWAYS one person at the front that causes it. Coming up on a section that is in the shade of trees, for instance. The road goes from black to white and icy instantly. They will freak out and slow suddenly, and the vehicles behind him will have no choice but to park it in a pile!

(26,467 posts)the first one for following too closely for conditions. I remember one time when I hit a sudden icy patch like that. In my case, it was black ice. No warning signs for me. My car did a 360 twice and then slid into the oncoming lane and stopped (miraculously) about 3 inches from a guard rail above a 12 foot drop to a river. The side of the highway next to the guard rail had about a foot of old snow piled up from plowing. The old snow had salt and sand in it, which apparently gave me some last minute traction when I literally (and desperately) stood up on the brake pedal. I know about pumping brakes, but that was useless that close to the guard rail. I counted on the snow pile to stop me if I braked hard and it worked.
Then I had to rock the car to get it out of the rut and back on the highway. Talk about scary and tense. Fortunately for me, there was no other traffic on the highway at the time. Then I had to continue for 15 more miles to get to work. I drove SLOWLY with two tires on the berm and two on the highway.
Ever since then, I've been cautious about driving slowly in bad road conditions. More than once I've driven past an impatient driver who had passed me and ended up in a ditch.

(77,295 posts)The roads don't look that bad, in terms of snow.
I know I've driven through much heavier snow. Last winter comes to mind!
But, if there was ice under that snow, anything could go haywire.

(26,467 posts)the temperature drop, causing flash freezing. Then snow on top of that. Plus, continual wind blowing thin swirls of powdery snow across the highway making it even more slippery.

(4,298 posts)driving under these conditions? Same anti-vaxxer, anti-masker mentality practiced by so many.
