There could have been so many other scenarios--smarter ones, less destructive.

For example: they can appeal to Hispanics. They have. In some areas Hispanics favor republicans.

And republicans will never win a presidential election again. The EC was created by slave owners, designed to protect the rights of slave owners. “Who gives a fuck about one person one vote?” Say the radical right wing freedom hating zealots.

Hell, one of the biggest advocated of the EC was Alexander Hamilton of the northern states. The EC was actually planned to almost always make the House of Representatives pick the President because it was figured basically no one (after George Washington) would ever get a majority.

But by the time of the 12 Amendment everyone realized it favored the South.
