(54,336 posts)I was with her when she died. She left this world literally screaming at the top of her lungs. I was with her constantly, she lived not even 3 miles from my house, we were together practically every day. She was home for the last few weeks when the doctor told us there was nothing they could do any more. Up until the last two days, she was still moving around. The doctor told us she will leave very quickly and her body will just start to shut down. But when she left, she left the world with a bang, she left it how she lived it. She screamed her way out of here, literally. I truly believe her survival instincts were so part of her DNA that she was not going to go quietly or willingly. It was just the two of us hanging out [during the last days] she was very funny. We didn't have to [talk] because I always knew how she felt about me. I was the love of her life, so the last part of her life we didn't have to have these heart to heart talks. She started to see people that weren't there. She thought I could see them too, but, of course, I couldn't. I would make fun of her like, "I'm going to go in the other room and you stay here and talk to your friends."

(54,336 posts)Trouble dont set up like rain, so we are keeping our options open in terms of staying in Sweden. We do not like the direction the country is starting to move in after the new hard RW-influenced government took control. We might move back to London, not sure. Fucking Brexit and the Tories are bollocksing up the UK though.

(1,296 posts)and Gaudete, in that order. Sorry, but everything else sounds treacly and grating to me.
As you might guess, I'm not really that big into Christmas, but godspeed to all of you who are.
Here's the closing of the Messiah. It's just breathtaking. I think "Amen" is one of the most beautiful pieces of music ever written.
Here's the more familiar "Hallelujah Chorus."
And here's my favorite version of Gaudete. Yeah, it's by Steeleye Span and they mispronounce "virginae," but it's still my fav.

This song was written during the 1500's.
(On edit: the 3rd one was done as a "joke" by the "singer" who sang wildly off key on purpose. For fun, he claimed. Oh, right!

(17,589 posts)I'm not even religious but it brings me to tears every time I hear it at Christmas. My eldest brother who is dead now was a baritone soloist and he sang this as his Christmas solo every year. In the early 60's his high school chorus director taped his solo and it was played at the local church over a speaker that was set up in a live manger scene. My parents would drive us kids there to see and hear it. As I said, we were atheists but they were very proud of their son.

Any version of the Nutcracker Suite from traditional orchestra to the Tuba Choir or Duke Ellington's arrangements, any version will do for me, the more obscure the better. I do really like the Mandolin Orchestra and the LA Guitar Quartet versions a lot.

(102,664 posts)For all of December and be just fine come January. A lot of what's on the radio is enough to make me silly in bad ways so I avoid exposing myself any of that. It's ubiquitous so I'm sure to hear every song I dislike at least once regardless. There are other songs I can tolerate and some could have made the list but those are either mentioned by others above or will be.

(9,204 posts)a few years ago I went to a live show of the Trans-Siberian Orchestra, and I was actually pretty impressed with the creative arrangements, children's choir, and some original music. Just an alternative if someone is bored. They change the show from year to year. Just some examples here.

(34,216 posts)It's from 1960. It's a shame. It had just a great sound with the Children's Chorus. They could sing faster and the harmony and descant were more on point. Such a fun song. Too bad it has disappeared.
The following is an adult version
Boston Gay Men's Chorus does a pretty good version
