Consider this your warning 😐
Duke Energy: Alert! The extremely low temperatures & high energy demand continue to place an unusual strain on the energy grid. Please consider powering down all nonessential electric devices and delaying unnecessary energy use until 10:00 AM Monday to help avoid rotating outages in the early morning hours. We understand this is a difficult ask given both the holidays and the cold temps and we are grateful for your efforts. Learn more about how we respond to these grid emergencies and how you can help at duk.us/32. Thank you for your cooperation. Text stop to cancel.
note - pressing STOP does not cancel rolling blackouts in the a.m.

(9,149 posts)in the grid/generation etc. and instead plowing profits into dividends etc. to enrich shareholders. People are quite rightly pointing out that EV charging on a really large scale combined with increasing HVAC demands will be problematic. But the "public utilities" haven't operated in the interests of the public for a very long time.
An ever increasing demand on water infrastructure/availability is also a dramatically increasing problem. Remember that the infrastructure plan that we did get passed was scaled way back by Manchin and the GQP to only a fraction of the original plan. Failure to invest in maintenance and upgrading is purposeful neglect. The ones who make the decision not to keep things up do so for the purpose of plowing that money into pet projects/benefactors projects that will yield campaign contributions etc. They also do so because they know that eventually the infrastructure will have to be almost completely redone at a massive cost and that is their chance to lop off some more money to pals for contracts/campaign contributions. I've seen schools refuse to spend money for decades on basic roof repairs/building repairs and upgrades and then finally they have to spend many hundreds of millions of dollars on a new building. It's a scam.

(33,500 posts)Rolling outages on Saturday in three different counties in NC. I received the same text message from Duke this evening about possible rolling outages tomorrow morning. I turned off all my outside Christmas lights (3 strands) and left only my indoor tree lit and two lamps on tonight.
Going to bed now and hope I don't wake up to no heat because of a rolling blackout. Fortunately, I have a gas cooktop so at least I'll be able to boil water to make coffee in the morning if the damn power is out.
Fuck Duke for their head in the sand lack of planning for extreme weather events due to climate change and the increased demand for service from the increase in population of the state. Oh, and fuck Republicans, too, for their resistance to facts which makes it necessary to plan for change.

(28,668 posts)So what can we take away from this ?
1- with a warning, power consumers will react correctly and power down their power consumption
2- Dook got their ass in a sling with unannounced rolling power outages, and sent out the request to customers
3- its an experiment in control - seeing if they can program consumers into reducing their power consumption with threats of rolling blackouts
🤔
anyway, fook Dook power

No one should find this acceptable in this day and age.
