Putin does not understand Freedom. That's why he is losing and may be looking for a way out.

The people of Ukraine got a taste of Freedom. They like it. The people of Ukraine are not fighting for a religion, tribe, political party, they are fighting for Freedom. Freedom for their children, they are united. People who are fighting for Freedom will never, ever, give up. Putin doesn't understand this.

I have become a fan of the people of Ukraine. They fight for Freedom like us.

2. He wants to use the "negotiation" talk to leverage the EU to push Ukraine to take a bad deal.

The EU is still dependent on RU oil/gas and many politicians really don't want to talk about energy cutbacks in the middle of winter. I think Ukraine will never take a bad deal given all the over the top things the Russians have done but that doesn't stop Putin from trying. He has few options and the battlefield situation continues to get worse for the Ru army. It will take time but assuming Ukraine continues getting well supplied and the Ru army continues to founder badly, Ukraine taking back all lands including Crimea is a real possibility. One that Putin would likely not survive politically.
