Yeah, I know that many are thinking that this is just another post berating the DOJ and Merrick Garland.
Actually, this is a post about the virtually total injustice embedded in the American "justice system."
A black man found with a small amount of "forbidden drugs" may go to prison for decades. A successful white man caught with an ounce of coke is more than likely to get a slap on the wrist.
A homeless person shoplifting some food may face serious prison time. A scam artist stealing people's life savings often has a lawyer that will get him off easy.
A person visiting the National Archives and trying to break the glass housing historic documents, will be facing jail time. And ex president who stole unknown amounts of highly classified government documents, is living in a castle and playing golf anytime and anywhere he wants to.
No one can tell me that our justice system is not unbalanced, unfair and totally broken. It seems that justice is blind to inequities.
Anytime I hear someone say, "America is the greatest country in the world," I turn away in disgust.
Most intelligent people know that real "Justice" doesn't exist in America. And nothing is being done to bring it into being.

(10,599 posts)The idea that America is this country viewed as Great around the world, is pure folly. We live in a bubble, and others see us for what we truly are. Be that our "justice" system, our new abortion fiasco, or our inability to do shit about gun violence.

The January 6th Committee did a magnificent job. At this moment, the future of our country is in the hands of a few people at the Dept. of Justice. Will they conclude that an ex president should not go to prison? Or will they actually decide that "No one is above the law."
The choices they make will decide the fate of American democracy.

(33,424 posts)The burglary took place in June, 1972. The burglars were indicted in Sept. 1972 and convicted in Jan. 1973. The White House coverup began in earnest in March, 1973. Nixon's top people were indicted in March, 1973 and were convicted in Jan 1974.
More to the point. Watergate was much more complicated that Jan 6. Watergate did not have videos, emails or text messages as evidence. More importantly the DOJ was in the hands of the same party as the people and president being investigated. They were investigating their bosses. That is not the case here.

Even then a conviction will be nearly impossible.

(12,219 posts)For example, the justice system in the US works (for white people). Or, the justice system in the US is fantastic (for very rich people).
One of the things that bothers me is that many judges and district attorneys are elected, and DAs especially often pander to the voters by arresting and prosecuting people they know are not guilty. After the election, the person might be quietly let go or just sent to jail on flimsy evidence. When partisan politics, especially right-wing politics, takes over the administration of the law, real justice often gets left behind.

Being male is also extremely helpful.
I thought everyone knew that. We're only a country of laws for the poor, for the rich, the law is only an issue if they screw over other rich white people.
