Kickboxing came with it - something I only tolerated because I had to if I wanted to earn a black belt. was determined to earn a black belt.

It was interesting to observe in class. I always wondered about people’s motivations in there. Were they there for the ART in martial arts, or cuz they liked the idea of it being a safe place to be allowed to hit people? There were folks there whose favorite part was the sparring, not the forms, and they said so. It was the forms that appealed to me. Those FORMS! First time this longtime failure at gym class had ever actually felt athletic! On the other hand, I saw sparring as little more than a necessary evil.

It was all much more philosophical than physical, at least to me. And there was a lot of philosophy in the teaching. Lots of it. The Tao Te Ching. Good for focusing the mind.

But even so, we all were almost ridiculously padded up in sparring days. There weren’t just gloves and helmets. There was protective padding for EVERY part of you, all the way down to the feet. Every kid in sparring class (and us adults, too) arrived with a big shoulder bag of padded stuff. And thank goodness!!!

The middle school boys in my daughter’s class parrot that stupid kickboxer’s misogyny. He’s trying to ruin a generation. But, maybe sunshine is the best disinfectant, because he got owned by a woman. Greta owned him for sure, but I think he’s response is what makes him a laughing stock. He replied to her, “How dare you.” It was cool to follow him, now his followers are being mocked. Maybe let the jerks on Twitter. Show them for what they are.
