(8,387 posts)Supposedly, there are dog vests which apply compression which is alleged to comfort the dog. Theres a brand name that used to advertise heavily, but Ive wondered if they work, or at least work often enough to be worth trying.

(9,354 posts)sometimes a "white noise generator" (most of them have multiple sound settings) can also help animals cope with loud noises. And Chewey has them, In fact, I got mine from Chewy. I no longer have animals, but Chewy is such a friendly place - I have never heard anything bad about Chewy, but, oh boy, have I heard a lot of good things - that I tend to look there first. An amazing number of things you might not think of are or can be pet-related, and they carry them. I also got a rug rake from them.

(2,344 posts)Warm but wet. It's already put a damper on the fireworks and shooting.
Last year a trio of vehicles went up our road shooting out the windows just after dark. My youngest was outside and had the sense to hit the deck. He was fine.
They were, I guess, shooting upwards. Never found any holes in my house or animals.
Just stupid. Maybe I'll sleep better tonight.

(90,039 posts)We were out within earshot of there one year. Good Grief, you'd think you were in a shooting gallery! And there was a small civil aviation airport near there. It made me worry about the planes there - many of which were not parked in hangars but just out, exposed, and it wouldn't have surprised me if a few of those exposed wings wound up with bullet holes in them. It sounded more like the 4th of July than New year's Eve out there. I wanted to leave immediately!

(76,706 posts)Our Vincent didn't react much last July 4, or when we had the town fest later in the summer.
But, Walter absolutely freaked out. Panting, pacing, etc.
I feel your nephew's angst. Not like we can explain what's going on to a dog.

(3,353 posts)My little chihuahua goes nuts during fireworks - runs around in circles barking like crazy. My others aren't too happy either. Therefore I'm always home on NYE, July 4th, etc.

(17,577 posts)That is nothing but an absolute menace to everyone around them is beyond me. I freaking HATE the destruction that fireworks cause and the idiots who think they are harmless.
Instead of spending money on crap like fireworks, donate the money to an animal shelter. Be a decent human being.

People who do this have NO regard for others. It is the most selfish and unnecessary crap in the world in my opinion. Serves no purpose whatsoever and should be banned.

Ember (cat) is not afraid of fireworks, or at least does not cower when they go off. She growls at them. Fiercely. "Eff off, you flashy sky monsters!"
Happy New Year😀

Liberty Belle
(9,707 posts)Our husky was terrified of fireworks.
Then I turned on the TV to a fireworks show, and proceeded to exclaim "ooh" and "ah" and clap hands and smile at each fireworks image/sound. Pretty soon she was wagging her tail and happy again.
Not sure if this would work with everyone, but showing her there was nothing to be afraid of seemed to work for us. We had serious illegal fireworks shows going on one 4th of July, which is when we tried this.
Our dog is used to loud noises on the TV, from when hubby watches cop shows etc, so masking the outside sounds with noises she was familiar with worked.
You may want to record a fireworks show to keep on hand for the future, if you have illegal shows going on at odd hours.

Agreed, my dog was trembling and following me around from about 3 pm, because of the lunatics in the neighborhood firing off M 80's, mortars, etc. He doesn't even like it when I turn the stereo up, but this was ridiculous...Happy New Year...It is more quiet now!
