The safety was injured in the first quarter of the Bills game against the Cincinnati Bengals on Monday Night Football.
Hamlin tackled Cincinnati wide receiver Tee Higgins, got to his feet and then crumpled to the ground. A stretcher and ambulance came onto the field as most of the Bills' roster came off the sideline to kneel or stand around Hamlin. First responders administered CPR to Hamlin on the field. Hamlin was given oxygen was he was loaded into an ambulance.
Other Bills plays could be seen crying as Hamlin was tended to by medical personnel. Other players held hands praying.
He fell to the ground at about 8:56 p.m. ESPN cut from the broadcast from the field and went to a studio about 9:08 p.m.

Game is suspended as of 6:19 Pacific Time.
I've never seen this kind of emergency response during a game. This game HAS to change.

(10,702 posts)Commotio cordis is a phenomenon in which a sudden blunt impact to the chest causes sudden death in the absence of cardiac damage. This condition was first described in the middle of the 18th century in the context of chest trauma among workers.
it too-the blow to the upper chest can cause heart arrhythmia or tear to blood vessels going to the heart.

(6,301 posts)I would be shocked if there wasnt an AED available and ready to use within a minute or so. That usually makes a person much more likely to survive.

This is unprecedented.

(14,180 posts)Its meaningless now. How can they be expected to play?
Why this is even an issue is stunning. Call it.

(3,908 posts)Gathers was a standout college basketball player who suddenly collapsed and died during a game. Had a previously unknown heart condition. Hamlin made a hit on a player, and got back up initially like it was a routine play, which it appeared to be. But then suddenly collapsed and went back down moments later. Hope that does not mean some sort of heart condition spurred the incident, exacerbated by the intensity of the activity on the field.
Hope it's noting like that. it is clearly life threatening.

(19,406 posts)least from what I thought I saw in the moment. With the blow to the chest, collapse, and CPR being all I know at the moment, I wonder about commotio cordis...

(34,214 posts)Really it could be a lot of things that could lead to the heart stopping like an aneurism, stroke, or even a conventional heart attack.
Im sure he is getting the best care possible. Good luck, Damar.

(68,952 posts)No one could have known the condition that was in that player until he was examined.
Ilsa
(64,386 posts)to play sports are not thorough enough to detect a weak aortic arch. Maybe they can detect a murmur, or maybe if the physician detects a minor symptom of a problem and orders more tests.
Scary stuff.

(15,359 posts)injured. The force in a crash or with a hit can be a lot worse than it looks. A lot of head injuries look like a guy just got dumped on his back, but his head hits the turf way harder than it appears.

(68,952 posts)The incredible humanity we saw on the field. Men in dark uniforms weeping and hugging men in light uniforms. a filled stadium quiet and respectful. ESPN commentators obviously emotional and upset. One coach hugging another in support.

I know very little about professional sports, don't know anyone who is a pro player, but how close those men must be was suddenly obvious to a know-nothing like me.
