Trump's last-minute plea fails to persuade House Republicans as Kevin McCarthy fails to win House speakership for a fourth time

Former President Donald Trump's morning plea for House Republicans to put their differences aside and make Kevin McCarthy the next Speaker of the House failed to end the most chaotic race for the top job in over a century.

"It's now time for all of our GREAT Republican House Members to VOTE FOR KEVIN, CLOSE THE DEAL, TAKE THE VICTORY, & WATCH CRAZY NANCY PELOSI FLY BACK HOME TO A VERY BROKEN CALIFORNIA," Trump wrote on his social media platform, Truth.

Hours later, 20 House Republicans voted to support Rep. Byron Donalds, a Florida Republican, sending the vote to a fifth ballot.

Trump's words of support came less than a day after he told NBC News that "we'll see what happens" after McCarthy failed to win the speakership on three different ballots, the most votes it has taken to determine the gavel since 1923. Trump had previously given McCarthy his blessing for the leadership race.
