(111,367 posts)Leaving his home didn't mean giving up on his fight against Russia. "If I had been born in America or Canada, I wouldn't come here to Ukraine. But because Russia took everything from me, I have to resist. Nothing else matters," Mansur says.
Today, Mansur is the deputy commander of the Sheikh Mansur Battalion (no relation), one of at least two all-Chechen battalions fighting in Ukraine against Russia. These Chechens are among the 20,000 foreign fighters that the Ukrainian government estimated to have joined its forces as of early March, near the start of Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Not all Chechens are alike and many have no loyalty to Putin's thug buddy or to Russia. In fact, I've read a couple of semi apocryphal sources saying the Khadyrovite Chechens are being used at the rear to shoot any Russians trying to retreat, something Russian command equates with desertion.
And this is another reason Ukraine will win, sooner or later: anyone who has been under Russia's control has a very good reason to want to prepare to fight them in the future. There are retired military from all over the planet (even some from Russia) fighting on Ukraine's side, but the largest numbers are from former SSRs or present vassal states.
