The teacher is being treated at Riverside Regional Medical Center. During a joint press conference with the mayor Friday night, Newport News police said the teacher has life-threatening injuries.
Chief Drew confirmed a 6-year-old boy is in custody.
Police said during the press conference that the shooting was not accidental and that they are working to learn how the student got a firearm and why the shooting occurred.

I had a six year old almost a year ago accuse me of strangling him when in fact he physically assaulted me when I was a substitute teacher. AND his regular teacher quit in the middle of the year before she got tenure. The kid was that bad.

(65,094 posts)First, the kid didn't but his own gun. So, the gun owner should be responsible.
Second, the kid could have accidentally shot himself, which seems like reckless endangerment of a minor.
I'm sure prosecutors could come up with a few other laws the parents broke.

Seriously, how does the gun lobby spin this as anything other than a loud cry for reducing the amount of guns in our society?

...6 year olds can't legally purchase or own guns...
...at least I don't think so...
