This scares me because it will take them just one day to do that. Not weeks. Not months.
This is the most important job Smith is doing for the whole damned country.
Please be speedy.

(13,913 posts)They can & will try every shenanigan for sure. They w not succeed, as they have a very thin margin of control on the house & Biden w not grant pardons. The arc of thebmoral universe is l9ng but it bends towards justice. I hope indictments happen this year for all of them.

According to a report from CNN, special counsel Jack Smith has given a signal where his investigation into Donald Trump is going by adding two specialists in public corruption cases to his staff.
Now that Smith, handpicked by Attorney General Merrick Garland to take over the Department of Justice's investigations of the former president, has settled in, CNN is reporting that a "new phase" of heightened scrutiny has also begun.
As the report notes, Smith reached out to two longtime colleagues to be at his "right hand" as the investigation proceeds.
According to CNN, two sources confirmed, "Raymond Hulser, the former chief of the DOJs public integrity section, and David Harbach, who conducted cases against former Sen. John Edwards and Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell," are joining the team and that Harbacj has been seen observing ongoing trials involving members of the Proud Boys.

(8,172 posts)So much to read into those three words. Just like I, and many many others did during the Mueller investigation, at the time.
Deja vu?
Sounds like it to my eyes and ears.
What was that dumbya said to his adoring fans?
"Fool me once, shame on shame on you. Fool me you can't get fooled again.
I don't know if the media is doing this for ratings (likely) but at this point, since the "new phase" hasn't been defined in terms of indictments, charges, prosecutions, guilty verdicts sentencing, then a "new phase" is a misnomer at this point two years later, in my view.
I understand we want to remain optimistic. I certainly wish I could, but false hope is fodder for furthering depression and nurturing apathy. Psychological voter suppression in other words. I firmly believe every time we feel like our peeps are going to save the day for justice and democracy,, and they come up short or take too long, it has a damaging impact on overall enthusiasm.
Lack of faith in our system of governance is what has brought us where we are over the several decades.
In my view. ymmv.

(18,881 posts)Bush II then Trump stuffed all of our government agencies with as many rabid right wing ideologues as they could. Even President Obama couldn't purge a large number of them, then we had Trump and it got so much worse. I hope Smith is a man who cares about the rule of law applying to everyone, but I'll only believe it when I see justice served.

(28,493 posts)BFD. How about indicting, arresting, or convicting?
Investigating means zero if there is no follow up and no consequences.
I'm so fucking sick and tired of all these claims that any day now indictments are coming down, and still zilch. Every day is Fitzmas these days.

(17,491 posts)Imagine, on the 2nd anniversary of the Insurrection - the FIRST INDICTMENT is brought on DONALD JOHN TRUMP - charged with TREASON!
Man, those RepubliQan idiots playing games in the House would have just loaded their pants and sat down to cry - and town squares throughout the country would have been having a TGIF that would be remembered for years to come!

(1,766 posts)Not for a felony.
They have to convince a grand jury to indict.
I dare you to approach any grand jury member and tell them what to do.
Hint: Attempting to tamper with a grand jury is itself a felony. And you're not in the club to walk from that charge.

(28,493 posts)So what exactly to people get put on trial for?
When I think about the former convicts who wound up in jail after voting, when they were specifically told they could vote, and Trump is still running around completely free, despite such things as taking classified documents from the White House, well, the mind boggles.

(96,878 posts)Google works wonders:
And where the House select committee hit brick walls in its probe including with recalcitrant witnesses who claimed privileges, or, like Mark Meadows, bailed on cooperating with congressional investigators midway through DOJ prosecutors now working under Smith will have certain tools to dismantle those barriers. They include ongoing legal proceedings about piercing the shield of confidentially that normally surrounds a president.
The special counsel also has a massive amount of evidence already in-hand that it now needs to comb through, including evidence recently turned over by the House January 6 committee, subpoena documents provided by local officials in key states and discovery collected from lawyers for Trump allies late last year in a flurry of activity, at least some of which has not even been reviewed yet, according to sources familiar with the investigation.
Smith himself sent subpoenas to election officials in seven battleground states and received a trove of material. Included in the response from Michigans secretary of state is an email from a county official who was reporting two voicemails they received in December 2020 from individuals seeking access to voting equipment. One callcame from someone claiming to work for Trumps post-election legal team, the clerk wrote.

(36,631 posts)Here's a video of a Russian media broadcast in October:
https://www.democraticunderground.com/100217267195
The in-the-field reporter warns of anticipating territorial losses through November and December, but then it should turn around. That makes me suspect Poot was counting on a 'red wave' to bring him relief in January. We had enough turnout to thwart that.
We may not see the insurrectionists held accountable soon, but at least aid to Ukraine can't be cut off by the Gangsters Of Putin in the House.

(96,878 posts)Sarah Binder, political science professor at George Washington University's Columbian College of Arts and Science, told Newsweek that she suspects any Republican attempt to defund the investigation using the rule "would fail."
"It's not clear to me that Republicans would get 218 votes to pass the bill in the first place," Binder said. "Even if the House succeeded, I doubt a Democratic-led Senate would agree to a spending bill that defunds Department of Justice personnel conducting lawful investigations."
Binder said that she also doubted whether "Senate GOP leaders would necessarily back their House colleagues' efforts."
