We are watching a fascist political party made up of election deniers, white supremacists, climate change deniers, perverts, liars, religious hypocrites, and other assorted scumbags finally CRASHING AND BURNING in humiliating fashion, live on TV, for days on end.
IMO this is not bad for America, this is fucking great for America.

Meanwhile, omg another gasbag Repub is lying and bloviating again. Just count the votes already.

(9,081 posts)Republicans are ruining their brand among the squishier voters they got this election. McCarthy's leadership is knee-capped before it's even begun.
Let them be a mess until the 2024 election. It'll do us all of the favors.

(16,437 posts)"McCarthys leadership" is an oxymoron. He's going to be the weakest speaker since, well, maybe ever.
I'm glad this part of the sh!t show is finally over (it was getting hella tedious), but the sh!t show itself is just getting started. Hang on tight, folks. It's going to be a crazy ride.

(54,033 posts)They'll be caked in mud and the usual horseshit, but once McCarthy has his feeble hands on the wheel, he'll take out his humiliation on social security recipients, elderly healthcare & prescription customers, immigrants, refugees, educators, and anyone else the Republicans like to screw over in order to feel better about themselves.
Mean people suck. I assume most of these feebs secretly hate , but it's going to be an appalling two years. Thank god for the US Senate.

(11,320 posts)I'm skeptical of their ability to pass legislation (given the Senate). They will, however, be able to do a lot of 'investigation' and made-for-TV theatrics. No real way of stopping that.
Will they have degraded and devalued the office/institution? Well yeah. But, I mean - look at the people that the American voters are putting there ... You have to sort of suspect that 'degradation' is part of the playbook. Did Hershel Walker - Cawthorn - Gaetz - Boebert - Taylor-Greene - Santos .. ever command anything like respect? For either self or office?
So - 'contempt' is kind of a built in feature.

(10,434 posts)I can't help but fear that CBS etc will find a way to spin this on the evening news in favor of republicons, or at the least, "both sides".
Or they can simply ignore it and to the majority of Americans, it never happened.
Even though we watched it all.
...as long as they're fucking each other they haven't got time to fuck America...
...and this is good...

(535 posts)I think there is a chance that McCarthy will get elected. If he does, he will be heavily compromised and will be controlled by the extreme MAGA crazies. The next two years will be a nightmare. The House controls the purse strings. If McCarthy and the extreme MAGAs are in charge, they will not hesitate to shut down the government and destroy the economy in the name of their deranged politics. They will hold the Congress hostage. The next two years will be pure chaos.
To prevent this the Dems should maybe back a more moderate Republican for the Speaker that is not beholden to the MAGA extremists. We could form a consensus government that is bipartisan. In exchange we might get committee positions and other concessions. We could then have a relatively stable House government run by moderates and not the chaos of the MAGA crazies.
If we allow McCarthy to win he will be run by every petty vindictive MAGA extremist. The chaos that we are seeing now will continue for the next two years. An alliance between Dems and more Centrist Republicans has already been proposed by Bacon of Nebraska and others. We should make such a deal soon before McCarthy gets the remaining MAGA votes.

ICYMI, Rober's pick for Spealer is David Jotce of Ohio.
We should have cut a deal with the Republican Governance Group and put in Bacon or Joyce with concessions and committee appointments for Dems. One thing is that since it only takes one House member to call for a no confidence vote for the Speaker, we could still take McCarthy out in the future. We should have done this before McCarthy was elected, when the Republicans and MAGAs were at each others throats. We need a House run by sensible centrists and moderates, not right wing whackos. We would have been much smarter to listen to those like Reich that suggested a deal with moderate Republicans.

(6,896 posts)in all those cockamamie concessions. Any one member can "move to vacate the chair." So it may not be over.
But since Jack Smith just hired two ace prosecutors specifically, at leas according to an announcement on Twitter, to "investigate Congressional members," it's also a possibility - I'm not counting on it, but it's a possibility - that we could achieve a majority through vacancies.
As I say, I'm not counting on it. It's just a tiny glimmer of hope, It was posted by sheshe2, and questions about the sourcing are answered by her in the comments.

(1,766 posts)The worst of the thugs couldn't muster together enough votes to keep him out of the speaker job. What makes you think they'll muster the votes to oust him from the job?
We're talking about a party with a) a razor-thin majority and b) who are at each other's throats. Literally.
The loons can scream all they want for X, Y and Z, but unless they can get ALL of their party on board with backing what they want (doubtful), they are screwed.
All that the r thugs will do over the next two years is conduct a bunch of kangaroo investigations and try to shut down the government.
That won't last as long as they'll hope. The donor class can't have their money harmed. They will pay a bunch of the not-so-insane members cartloads of money to start working with some Democrats, sooner or later. Especially r thugs in deep purple districts. Those people have everything to lose by letting the debt ceiling go pop, and everything to gain by working with the Democrats.

(14,582 posts)We must never underestimate the purposive brainwashing of the American electorate, though. Since Powell's Manifesto in 1971 to the US Chamber, and Reagan killing the Fairness Doctrine, which was designed to prevent demagogues like Trump from rising to power, we have had massive corporate propaganda that has essentially dumbed down, and brainwashed a huge segment of Americans.
I know you know this, but people really ARE fully capable of very high level reasoning. Just listen to a sports call in talk show and you'll see how very sophisticated people are...until someone mentions politics.
Most Americans really ARE aware what dirtbags these Republicans actually are, but they still persist in voting Republican. Why? It is this phenomenon our messaging must address.
Rich people really don't need government. They can take care of themselves quite effectively. It is the poor and middle class who need government. We desperately need a government that functions.
When Reagan said that government was not the solution but the problem, he began a systematic chipping away of our trust in the institution of government - our belief in a government of, by and for the people. We don't really have that now, do we? We have a government of, by and for billionaires and corporations. Look at our tax codes. Look at this year's $858 billion war budget. Where is our healthcare? Where is our expanded Social Security? Where is the affordable debt-free college for our children and grandchildren?
While it is great for the country to see the Republican disgustingness and amorality close up, we have to figure out how to message more effectively to break through the hard-core 'ignorant and proud of it' mentality of too many Americans.

With 30+ years of unchallenged lies (because of the end of the Fairness Doctrine) people are very confused...
I assume that some may never be able to face the fact that they were conned, but for the other GOP voters, the exposure of these horrible people they voted in will hopefully give them a way back to the truth...
